William Dean was born on 1st January 1810 and baptised the following month at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire, son of a straw plaiter called Elizabeth Dean, formerly Hobbs, and her husband James Dean, a labourer. William had a twin sister, but sadly she died when less than a month old.

In his mid twenties, William fathered a child with a woman called Sophia Atwood. The boy, Amos Atwood Dean, was born on 11th August 1835. William and Sophia went on to marry eight months later, on 2nd April 1836 at Great Gaddesden. Amos was baptised the next day. The family's abode on his baptism record was given as Gaddesden Row, a hamlet to the east of Great Gaddesden, close to the border with Flamstead.

After their marriage, William and Sophia went on to have another ten children at Great Gaddesden between 1837 and 1856, although one died at the age of one in 1853.

William's father died in 1860.

Each census from 1841 to 1861 finds William, Sophia and their children living at Gaddesden Row in Great Gaddesden. William worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Sophia was a straw plaiter.

William's mother died in 1866.

William died in 1870, aged 60. Sophia survived him by nearly fifteen years.
