William Slaughter was baptised on 12th September 1819 in the parish of St Stephen, in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He was the son of a labourer called Joseph Slaughter and his wife Susannah.

On 19th October 1839, aged 20, William married Hannah Dean at Great Gaddesden, about ten miles north-west of St Albans.

After their marriage, William and Hannah moved to Bushey, near Watford. The 1841 census finds them living on Merry Hill Lane in Bushey, with William working as an agricultural labourer.

William and Hannah had two children together, but sadly both died young. They had a son called William in 1847, who died shortly after being born, with his birth and death both being registered in the same quarter. He was followed in 1848 by a daughter called Hannah, who died when she was nine months old in 1849.

The 1851 census finds William, Hannah and her brother Joseph living at Burchell Cottage in Bushey. Hannah was working as a straw plaiter at this time.

By 1861 William and Hannah had moved to Carpenders Farm at Oxhey in the parish of Watford. In 1861 they were described as boarders living in the farmhouse with the farmer, and William was working as a shepherd. They were still at Carpenders Farm in 1871, but living in one of the separate farm workers' cottages beside it. William was working as a ploughman in 1871. Hannah's sister Maria was living with them there too.

William and Hannah later returned to Bushey, appearing in the 1881 census living at Mead Cottage. Hannah's sister Maria was still living with them.

William died at the age of 65. He was buried at Aldenham, just north of Bushey, of 24th January 1885. His last abode was given as Spring Cottages in Bushey. Hannah only survived him by a few months, dying later that same year.
