May 1753, Augusta County, Virginia Court Records, page 441 Road established from Brown's bridge to the Glebe land, and Robert Campbell and John Trimble be surveyors, and with James Lusk, 443 they clear and keep the same in order. We do appoint Robert Campbell and John Trimble overseers from John Brown's bridge to the Glebe House and the undernamed persons to clear the same: .... Jacob Lockhart, James Lockhart.... (other names omitted)

We find from this volume that "a Council of War" was held at Augusta Courthouse, July 27, 1756, by order of the Governor, to consider and determine at what points forts should be erected along the frontier for the protection of the inhabitants. The Council was composed of Colonels John Buchanan and David Stewart, Major John Brown, and Captains Joseph Culton, Robert Scott, Patrick Martin, William Christian, Robert Breckenridge, JAMES LOCKHART, Samuel Stalnicker,. Israel Christian, and Thomas Armstrong. William Preston acted as clerk. The William Christian mentioned could not have been Captain Israel Christian's son of the sam2 name, who twenty years later was a prominent man, unless he was a wonderfully precocious boy in 1756.

At the meeting of the vestry in November, 1758, James Lockhart moved to "lay a levy for building a church in the parish," but the proposition was defeated, the vote standing : for a church, James Lockhart, John Archer, Sampson Archer and John Mathews ; against, Colonel Buchanan, John Buchanan, John Christian, Robert Breckin- ridge and John Smith.

  1.   The use of Horatio with various James' names is incorrect. An early James in Scotland was a herald for the king and therefore had "Herald" with the name James. This is where someone, researching, added or transcribed Horatio erroneously to several James.
