Henry Clouston Maitland was born on 12th May 1881 at 9 Mount Pleasant in the civil parish of Chirton and borough of Tynemouth, Northumberland. Mount Pleasant adjoined the dockyards of North Shields on the north bank of the River Tyne. Henry was the son of Isabella Preston Maitland, formerly Clouston, and her husband John Maitland, a brass finisher. They were both from Aberdeen in Scotland, but had moved to the north-east of England shortly after their marriage.

When Henry was still a small child, the family left Tynemouth and moved to Jarrow on the opposite bank of the river, in County Durham. Henry's younger brother was born in Jarrow in 1884. The 1891 census finds Henry living with his parents and siblings at 28 Lord Street in Jarrow. Henry's mother died the following year, aged about 47.

Some time between 1893 and 1900, the family left Jarrow and moved to Edinburgh.[9] In Edinburgh the family initially lived at 21 Pleasance, which was a seventeenth century tenement building abutting a section of the city wall known as the Flodden Walls. They were there at the time of the 1901 census, when Henry was described as being a plumber's apprentice.

By 1905 the family had moved a short distance to High School Yards, where they lived in a recently-built block of 56 homes, with housing on the upper floors facing south onto High School Yards and shops on the ground floor facing north onto Cowgate. Another resident of High School Yards was Agnes Young, who had moved to Edinburgh from Hawick. Henry and Agnes were married on 31st December 1907. At the time of their marriage Henry was actually not living in Edinburgh, but at 2 Cameron Place in Dumfries.[10]

After their marriage, Henry and Agnes settled at High School Yards, and by 1909 were living at number 52 High School Yards, which was to be their home for the rest of their lives. Henry's father continued to live in a different flat in the same building. Henry and Agnes had six children together between 1909 and 1927. The 1911 census finds Agnes and her eldest two children at 52 High School Yards. Henry was away from home on census night, being at Fodderty in Ross-shire with a large number of other plumbers.

At the outbreak of the First World War, Henry volunteered to serve in the 16th Royal Scots Regiment. His service records indicate that he was 5'4" tall and weighed 122lbs, and had two tattoos on his right arm. He also reported that he had previously served in the Queen's Rifle Volunteer Brigade of the Royal Scots, although records have not been found confirming when or how long he served there. Henry did not serve for long in the First World War. He enlisted on 29th November 1914, but was discharged less than five months later, on 20th April 1915 on medical grounds as "not likely to become an efficient soldier".

Henry's father died in 1926.

All six of Henry and Agnes's children lived to adulthood, although their second child died in 1947, aged 36.

Agnes died on 6th August 1948 at home at 52 High School Yards. Henry outlived her by fourteen years.

By 1955 a widow called Mary Elizabeth Legg (née Roberts) was living with Henry. They would marry in 1960, when Henry was 79.

Henry died at home at 52 High School Yards on 4th November 1962, aged 81. Mary survived him by 19 years.

Chirton was a civil parish which fell within the municipal borough of Tynemouth. It was separate from the civil parish of North Shields (which was also part of Tynemouth borough), but had a very close relationship with it, with much of the built up area of 'North Shields' on the plateau above the original centre of the village actually being in Chirton.
