William Maitland was born on 28th April 1871 at Sunderland in County Durham, son of Isabella Preston Maitland, formerly Clouston, and her husband John Maitland, a brass finisher. The family had only recently moved to Sunderland from Aberdeen. In William's early childhood the family moved around several ports and ship-building centres along the north-eastern coast of England, living at different times in Sunderland, Hull, Jarrow and Tynemouth. The 1881 census finds the family living in the North Shields area of Tynemouth.

By 1884 the family was living in Jarrow, when William's youngest sibling was born. They were still there in the 1891 census, when William was described as a brass finisher, following his father's trade.

William's mother died in 1892. After her death, the remaining family appear to have dispersed. One of William's sisters stayed in the Jarrow area, but his father and three youngest siblings moved to Edinburgh, his eldest brother moved to Cardiff, whilst he himself moved to London.

William was married in the Westminster area of London on 6th January 1895 to Annie Maisey, who worked as a tailor. They went on to have two children together; a daughter in 1895 and a son in 1902. The 1901 census finds Annie, William and their daughter living at 26 Smith Square in Westminster.

The 1911 census finds Annie and the two children living back at 7 Arneway Street, where Annie's parents also still lived. Annie was working as a waistcoat maker. William was not with them. He is recorded in the 1911 census as a homeless person, found by police in the St James's Park or Little George Street area, less than half a mile away from Annie and the children. It is not clear whether this was a one-off situation on the census night, or a more significant separation of Annie and William. However, no evidence has been found of them living together again after this time.

William later appears to have lived in the area to the north-west of London, in Little Stanmore, Cricklewood and Willesden. He was brought before magistrates several times for being drunk.

William's daughter married in 1915 and his son married in 1926, both in the Westminster area. William's father died in Edinburgh in 1926.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, William was living at 3 Ivy Road in Willesden in a house with nine other people who do not appear to have been related to him. His daughter was in Wimbledon and his son was in Wandsworth. It is not clear where Annie was living at this time.

It would appear that after the war started William's daughter and her husband left Wimbledon and moved to Brimington in Derbyshire, near Chesterfield, which is where the husband was originally from. They appear to have taken William's wife Annie with them. She died in 1942 in the Chesterfield district, aged 70.

Back in London, William moved across to the opposite side of London during the war, to Wheathill Road in Penge. He died at the County Hospital in nearby Farnborough on 21st August 1945, aged 73. He left a small estate which was administered by his son, suggesting that he had remained in touch with his family.
