Annie Maisey was born on 19th March 1872 in the western suburbs of London, daughter of Annie Maisey, formerly Jennings, and her husband Thomas Maisey, a carpenter. Young Annie appears in the 1881 census living with her parents at 1 Bloomburg Street in the Westminster area of London. The family clearly moved around within London; Annie claimed to have been born in either Notting Hill or Bayswater, whilst her younger siblings were born in Soho, the Tottenham Court Road area, Pimlico and Westminster.
By 1891 the family had settled at 7 Arneway Street, off Horseferry Road in Westminster.
On 6th January 1895, aged 22, Annie married William Maitland, a brass finisher originally from Sunderland. Annie was described as a tailoress when they married. They went on to have two children together; a daughter in 1895 and a son in 1902. The 1901 census finds Annie, William and their daughter living at 26 Smith Square in Westminster.
The 1911 census finds Annie and the two children living back at 7 Arneway Street, where Annie's parents also still lived. Annie was working as a waistcoat maker. William was not with them. He is recorded in the 1911 census as a homeless person, found by police in the St James's Park or Little George Street area, less than half a mile away from Annie and the children. It is not clear whether this was a one-off situation on the census night, or a more significant separation of Annie and William. However, no evidence has been found of them living together again after this time. William later appears to have lived in the area to the north-west of London, where he was brought before magistrates several times for being drunk. It is not clear where Annie was living at this time.
Annie's daughter married in 1915 and her son married in 1926, both in the Westminster area.
Annie has not been found in the 1939 register, taken at the outbreak of the Second World War. Her husband, daughter and son were all in different parts of the London area, being in Willesden, Wimbledon and Wandsworth, respectively.
It would appear that after the war started Annie's daughter and her husband left Wimbledon and moved to Brimington in Derbyshire, near Chesterfield, which is where the husband was originally from. They appear to have taken Annie with them. She died in 1942 in the Chesterfield district, aged 70. Back in London, William outlived her by three years.
