Jessie Clouston Maitland was born on 18th September 1877 at Hull in Yorkshire, daughter of Isabella Preston Maitland, formerly Clouston, and her husband John Maitland, a brass founder. Jessie's birth is the family's only sighting in Hull. Her parents were both originally from Aberdeen, but had spent the first half of the 1870s living in Sunderland. Jessie's younger sister was born in Jarrow in 1879. The family then briefly lived in the North Shields area of Tynemouth in 1881, having one child there and appearing there in the 1881 census, before returning to Jarrow by 1884 when Jessie's youngest brother was born, after which they appear to have settled in Jarrow.
The 1891 census find the family living at 28 Lord Street in Jarrow. Jessie's mother died in 1892. After this, the rest of Jessie's family seems to have moved away from Jarrow. Her eldest brother had already moved to Cardiff, another brother would move to London some time between 1891 and 1895, and her father and three youngest siblings all moved to Edinburgh some time between 1894 and 1901.
Jessie remained in Jarrow. She married Joseph Bell McGow in 1897, aged 20. They went on to have eight children together between 1898 and 1915. Both the 1901 and 1911 censuses find the family living in Union Street, Jarrow. Joseph worked as a plater and fitter in the shipbuilding industry.
Jessie's father died in Edinburgh in 1926.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Joseph and Jessie were living at 24 Morpeth Avenue in Jarrow. They had lived through the depression of the 1930s which saw Jarrow experience some of the worst unemployment in the country following the closure of Palmer's shipyard in 1934, leading to the Jarrow March in 1936 demanding government intervention to bring industry back to the town.
Jessie died in 1948, aged 70. Joseph survived her by nine years.
