John Maitland was born on 5th March 1869 in Aberdeen, son of Isabella Preston Maitland, formerly Clouston, and her husband John Maitland, a brass finisher. Young John was the couple's eldest child; they had married five months earlier.
Some time between 1870 and 1871 the family left Aberdeen and moved to the north-east of England. The family appears in the 1871 census living in Sunderland, where John had younger siblings born in 1871 and 1873. Some time after 1875 the family left Sunderland and moved to Hull, where a sister was born in 1877, before moving again to Jarrow where another sister was born in 1879. The 1881 census finds the family living in the North Shields area of Tynemouth, and another brother was born there later that year. By 1884 the family had settled back in Jarrow, with John's youngest brother being born there. The family appears to have stayed in Jarrow until after John left home.
In 1889, aged 20, John married Irene Baker in Cardiff. The couple has not been found in the 1891 census. Back in Jarrow, John's mother died in 1892. His father and youngest siblings later left Jarrow and moved to Edinburgh.
John and Irene appear to have had a daughter in the early 1890s (for whom no birth certificate has been found) and a son in 1896. They later claimed to have had six children in total, but four had died before 1911.
The 1901 and 1911 censuses each find the family living in the western suburbs of Cardiff. John worked as a fitter's labourer repairing ships in dry dock. John's father died in Edinburgh in 1926.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, John and Irene were living at 24 Bromfield Street in Cardiff.
Irene died in 1952, aged 83. John survived her by less than a year, dying in 1953, also aged 83.
