John Maitland was baptised on 16th November 1842 at Aberdeen, son of a nurse called Elizabeth Maitland, formerly Wilson, and her husband William Maitland, a watchman and police constable. The 1851 census finds John living with his parents and siblings at 5 Princes Street in Aberdeen. By 1861 the family was living at 1 Farquhars Court (later called Kirkgate Court), a narrow alley of houses accessed through an arch beside 18 Upperkirkgate in the centre of the city. John at this time was working as an apprentice brass finisher.
John's father died of pulmonary consumption in 1866. John was the informant for the death and said he had been present when his father died.
On 2nd October 1868, aged 25, John married Isabella Preston Clouston. She was also from Aberdeen, and had been working as an envelope maker prior to their marriage. They had a son born in Aberdeen the following year. In 1870 they had another son, but he died when only ten or fifteen minutes old. After that, Isabella, John and their son left Aberdeen and moved south to England, initially living in Sunderland, where they appear in the 1871 census. For the next few years they moved around various ports and shipbuilding centres along England's north-eastern coast, living at different times in Sunderland, Hull, Tynemouth and Jarrow. John worked as a brass finisher and brass founder. Isabella's parents followed them down to England some time between 1871 and 1881, settling in Jarrow. John and Isabella had eight children in total: five boys and three girls, with six children surviving to adulthood.
The 1891 census finds John and Isabella living at 28 Lord Street in Jarrow with their children.
Back in Scotland, John's mother died on 18th April 1892 in Edinburgh. Later that year, John also lost his wife. Isabella died on 5th August 1892 at 46 Lord Street in Jarrow of heart disease and dropsy. She was 46 years old.
John appears to have remained in Jarrow for a couple of years after Isabella's death, still being listed in the town in the 1894 electoral register. Some time between 1894 and 1901 he left Jarrow and moved to Edinburgh with his three youngest children. The 1901 census finds them living at 21 Pleasance, on the southern edge of the old town.
By 1905 the family had moved to High School Yards, just around the corner from Pleasance. John, his daughter Elizabeth and son Henry and would live at various different flats in this building for the rest of their lives. John's other children all settled a long way from Edinburgh. His son John moved to Cardiff, William and George both moved to London, and Jessie had stayed behind in Jarrow.
John died on 9th December 1926 in Edinburgh. He was 84 years old.
