Elizabeth Wilson was born around 1813 at Methlick in Aberdeenshire, daughter of Jean Wilson, formerly Riddle, and her husband James Wilson, a farmer.

Around 1836 Elizabeth had a daughter called Elizabeth at Methlick, whose father was said to be a farmer called Arthur Morrison.

Elizabeth’s next sighting is on 9th June 1838, when she married William Maitland at Fintray, about seventeen miles south of Methlick. At the time of their marriage he was described as a farm servant. Shortly after their marriage, Elizabeth and William moved into Aberdeen, having another six children there between 1838 and 1851.

The 1841 census finds Elizabeth, William and their children (including Elizabeth’s daughter from before her marriage) living at Park Street in Aberdeen. William was described as a labourer. By 1851 they had moved to 5 Princes Street and William was working as a watchman.

It is not clear when Elizabeth’s father died, although it seems likely that he died before death certificates were introduced in Scotland in 1855. Elizabeth’s mother came to live with her and William in Aberdeen, dying at their home at 30 Gerrard Street in 1857.

By 1861, Elizabeth, William and their children had moved to 1 Farquhars Court on Upperkirkgate in the centre of Aberdeen, with William working as a police officer. Living with them were three Wilson children, who may well have been Elizabeth’s nephew and nieces – their parents appear to have been a Lewis Wilson and Helen Grant, and in the 1851 census Lewis had said he was born around 1826 at Methlick, making it quite likely that he was a younger brother of Elizabeth.

William died in 1866, aged 49. His death certificate described him as being a constable in the City Police.

The 1871 census finds Elizabeth living alone at 5 Guestrow in Aberdeen and working as a sick nurse.

Some time between 1871 and 1881 Elizabeth left Aberdeen and moved to Edinburgh. The 1881 census finds her living at 3 Bells Brae in Edinburgh with two of her daughters, a son in law and a grandson all living in two rooms. She was still working as a nurse.

By 1891 Elizabeth was living with one of her grandsons and his wife at 6 Johnston Place in Edinburgh.

Elizabeth died on 18th April 1892 at 1 St Bernard’s Row in Edinburgh. Her death certificate says she was 69 years old, but all her census appearances suggest she was rather older than that, pointing to her actually being around 79.

  8. No birth or baptism record has been found for Elizabeth. In the censuses she indicated that she had been born around 1813 at Methlick in Aberdeenshire. Her death certificate gives her parents’ names as James Wilson and Jean Riddle. They had married at Methlick in 1812. Elizabeth’s mother Jean Wilson formerly Riddle died in 1857 in Aberdeen, with Elizabeth’s husband William Maitland acting as informant. There was an Elizabeth Wilson baptised at Methlick in 1818 whose parents were James Wilson and Barbara Milne, but in light of the evidence described above it is considered that she must be a different person.
