Elizabeth Wilson Maitland was born in 1879 at Jarrow in County Durham, daughter of Isabella Preston Maitland, formerly Clouston, and her husband John Maitland, a brass finisher. The 1881 census finds Elizabeth living with her parents and siblings at North Shields in Tynemouth on the opposite bank of the Tyne. They later returned to Jarrow some time between 1881 and 1884. The 1891 census finds Elizabeth and her parents and siblings at 28 Lord Street in Jarrow.
Elizabeth's mother died in 1892, when Elizabeth was thirteen years old. Some time between 1894 and 1901 Elizabeth and her widowed father and two of her brothers left Jarrow and moved to Edinburgh. The 1901 census finds them living at 21 Pleasance, on the southern side of the old town.
In 1902 Elizabeth married her first cousin, William Maitland. Their fathers were brothers. William was a widower with two children from his first marriage. He worked as a coach painter.
The 1911 census finds Elizabeth, William and six children living at 39 High School Yards in Edinburgh. Four of the children were Elizabeth's. Elizabeth and William had another child in 1913.
William died in 1915, aged 41. Elizabeth survived him by over fifty years. Her father lived with her at 39 High School Yards, dying in 1926.
Elizabeth died on 16th December 1965, aged 86. She died at Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary, but her usual address was still given as 39 High School Yards.
