William Maitland was born on 24th September 1873 at 42 Thistle Street in Edinburgh. He was the son of Margaret Maitland, formerly McCulloch, and her husband William Maitland, a coach painter. He had a twin sister called Agnes Jane, born fifteen minutes later.
The 1881 census finds William living with his parents and siblings at 5 Haugh Street in Edinburgh. By 1891 they were in nearby Deanhaugh Street, and William was working as an apprentice painter.
In 1894 William married Louisa Scott. They appear to have had two children together. She died after just a couple of years of marriage, on 1st December 1896.
The 1901 census finds William living with his widowed mother and siblings at 1 Brunswick Street. He was described as a coach painter, following his late father's trade.
In 1902, William married his first cousin, Elizabeth Wilson Maitland. Their fathers had been brothers. They went on to have five more children between 1903 and 1913. In 1911 they were living at 39 High School Yards, in the same building that Elizabeth's father lived in at the time.
William died on 18th September 1915 at the Royal Asylum in Edinburgh. He had been ill for a while, with his main cause of death given as "general paralysis of the insane", which he had apparently been suffering for six months. He died six days short of what would have been his 42nd birthday.
Elizabeth survived him by over half a century.
