George Clouston Maitland was born on 18th February 1884 at Jarrow in County Durham, son of Isabella Preston Maitland, formerly Clouston, and her husband John Maitland, a brass finisher. The 1891 census finds George living with his parents and siblings at 28 Lord Street in Jarrow. George's mother died in 1892, when George was only eight years old.

Some time between 1894 and 1901 George moved with his father, brother and sister to Edinburgh. The 1901 census finds them living at 21 Pleasance, on the southern edge of the old town.

By 1911, George had left Edinburgh and moved south to Bristol, where he worked as an engineer for the tramway company.

George later moved to London, where he was married in 1914 to Elsie Hardy. They went on to have six children together between 1914 and 1924, although two died young. Back in Edinburgh, George's father died in 1926.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Elsie and George were living at 9 Mill Lane in Hampstead in north London, and George was working as a tool maker.

Elsie died in 1944, aged 56. George outlived her by over thirty years. He died in 1975 in London, aged about 91.
