Facts and Events
Elsie Hardy's origins are difficult to research. She said she was born on 4th December 1887 at Constantinople (Istanbul) in Turkey to British parents. Her first confirmed sighting is not until 1911, by which time she was living in the north-western suburbs of London and working as a domestic servant, being a nurse for a couple with a two small children.
In 1914, Elsie married George Clouston Maitland. They went on to have six children together between 1914 and 1924, although two died young.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Elsie and George were living at 9 Mill Lane in Hampstead in north London, and George was working as a tool maker.
Elsie died in 1944, aged 56. George outlived her by over thirty years.
