Mary Elizabeth Roberts' origins have yet to be confirmed. As an adult, she gave her date of birth as 9th November 1896, and her marriage and death certificates say that her parents were a farmer called John Roberts and his wife Sidnah Jones. This family has yet to be identified in contemporary records.

Mary was married in 1919 in the Cardiff area to a railway labourer called Frederick Ewitt Legg. They do not appear to have had any children.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Mary and Frederick were living in Marine Buildings in Penarth. Frederick died in 1943, aged 44.

Mary later moved to Edinburgh. By 1955 she was living there with a widowed plumber called Henry Clouston Maitland at 52 High School Yards. They married in 1960. Henry died in 1962.

Mary appears to have lived the rest of her life in Edinburgh. She died on 14th January 1981 at her home, 88 East Crosscauseway, in Edinburgh.
