Agnes Young was born on 5th May 1884 at Hawick in Roxburghshire, daughter of a general labourer called John Young and his wife Elizabeth (or Betsy) Grierson. Agnes was born at 6 Dickson Street in the Wilton area of the town. By 1891 the family was living at 32 Mansfield Road, also in Wilton. They were still at that address in 1901, by which time Agnes was working as a woollen specker. Agnes's mother died in 1902.
When she was a young woman, Agnes moved to Edinburgh. She was married there on the last day of 1907 to a plumber called Henry Clouston Maitland. At the time of their marriage Agnes was living at 36 High School Yards, part of a tenement building above a row of shops on Cowgate in the Old Town. Henry was living in Dumfries when they married, although in the 1901 census he had been living at 21 Pleasance in Edinburgh, very close to High School Yards.
After their marriage, Agnes and Henry continued living at High School Yards, and by 1909 had settled at 52 High School Yards, which was to be their home for the rest of their lives. They had six children together between 1909 and 1927. The 1911 census finds Agnes and her eldest two children at 52 High School Yards. Henry was away from home on census night, being at Fodderty in Ross-shire with a large number of other plumbers.
All six of Agnes's children lived to adulthood. Her second child died in 1947, aged 36.
Agnes died on 6th August 1948 at home at 52 High School Yards. Henry outlived her by fourteen years.
