Violet recalled that her mother, "canned everything she could get her hands on." She had a grape arbor (it led to the outhouse). She canned grapes and all kinds of berries, including gooseberries, and made horseradish. She had a truck garden with many kinds of beans. When the beans were harvested, Gladys layed clean cloth on the cellar floor and her children would take off their shoes and stump the beans, thereby shelling them. Gladys canned dandelions. A family treat whas her homemade donuts.
