Obituary

Spencerville-Gladys Reynolds, 77, of Spencerville died at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Lima Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack suffered Wednesday morning.

Born July 15, 1894, in Spencer Township, she was a daughter of Samuel L. and Nettie V. (Louth) Savidge. She married Edward Reynolds on June 20, 1011. He survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Emmett (Ruby) Jones and Mrs. Paul (Violet) Ashton, both of Venedocia, Mrs. Murray (Doris) Griffin and Mrs. Donald (Lela) Barnes, both of Spencerville; three sons, Roy E. of Rt. 2, Elida, Merle E. of Rt. 2, Belle Center, and Gail S. of Lima; a sister Mrs. Richard (Mildred) Kill of Delphos; a brother, Earl Savidge of Spencerville; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was a member of West Union Christian Church and its Ladies Aid Society.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home with the Rev. John T. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Spencerville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.

    Violet recalled that her mother, "canned everything she could get her hands on." She had a grape arbor (it led to the outhouse). She canned grapes and all kinds of berries, including gooseberries, and made horseradish. She had a truck garden with many kinds of beans. When the beans were harvested, Gladys layed clean cloth on the cellar floor and her children would take off their shoes and stump the beans, thereby shelling them. Gladys canned dandelions. A family treat whas her homemade donuts.
