Advisory on Caldwell family in Augusta County, VA

Some researchers believe that George, James and Robert Caldwell (possible siblings) that migrated to early Augusta County from Ireland (per records of importation) MAY be related to the Caldwell's in Cub Creek, Virginia. Additional research is necessary to prove any relationship with those other Caldwell families.

Importation to Orange County, VA

The following persons appeared in Orange County, Virginia court in July 1740 to claim their "headrights" (Headrights were grants of 50 acres of land per "head" - or per white male over the age of 16 who transported himself to the colonies. They appear in the Court of Common Pleas in the county in which the land was granted):

George Caldwell to William Caldwell, his son, £10, 130 acres, part of 405 acres in Beverley Manor on a branch of Christian's Creek, branch near said William Caldwell's house. • Vol. 1 - Page 20 - August 20, 1746 - Page (73) William Thompson to be overseer from Court Ho. to Tinkling Spring, already viewed, with these tithables: John Lynn and his three sons, John Henderson, John Ramsey, John Preston, Wm. Palmer, David Stuart, James Coile, Joseph McClelbill, Alexr. Thompson, John Mitchell, John Butchison, Andrew Russell, Geo. Caldwell and his two sons.

• Page 444.--___ January, 1747. £15. William Thompson and wife Jean to the inhabitants of the Presbyterian congregation of Tinkling Spring, viz., James Patton, John Christian, John Finley, James Alexander, William Wright chose commissioners and trustees for the congregation, 110 acres called and known by the name of Tinkling Spring in Beverley Manor, and part of 944 acres (deed by Beverley to Thompson, 1744, in Orange) adjoining George Caldwell. Acknowledged, 19th November, 1747, by William.

• Vol. 1 - Page 31 - September 16, 1747 - Page (288) Road from the Cross Road below Hays on No. Side So. River to the ridge be cleared, and Thos. Stuart and Wm. Christian be overseers. George Caldwell and his son to be added to the tithables.

• Vol. 1 - SEPTEMBER 18, 1747. - (303) Road ordered from Tinkling Spring Meeting House to Col. Patton's Bridge, these to work it: James Patton's tithables, Robert Gibson's, Edward Hall's, Sam'l. Davies's, Wm. Thomson's, and Geo. Caldwell's tithables.

• Page 162.--29th November, 1760. Robert Gibson to William Caldwell, £30, 186 acres on a branch of Christian's Creek; cor. George Caldwell; cor. land belonging to the heir of Robert Gibson, deceased. Teste: Wm. Armstrong, Wm. Palmer, George Caldwell, George Caldwell. Delivered: Philip Dold by written order from David Caldwell, 20th May, 1803. (Note: the William Caldwell that acquired this tract adjoining George Caldwell, Sr. was apparently George's son, William Caldwell. George sold his son William part of George's original tract in 1765 "near William's house", which is most likely this acquisition).

• Vol. 1 - Page 103 - February 18, 1763 - Page (477) Andrew Russell, with two tithables, William Palmer, William Martin, Alexr. McDonald, Wm. Thompson, Alexr. Thompson, John Thompson, George Caldwell and his two sons, Wm. Henderson and John Wallace, to work the road from Christian's Creek to Rockfeil Gap.

George Caldwell Wife: Mary Children: William, Mary, Jane, David, Agness, George Imported self, wife, Mary and five children on 24 July 1740. (Wilson, p. 424) Purchased 405 acres on Christian Creek same date; land later purchased by Tinkling Spring bordered his property. (Wilson, p. 418) Was among the group of subscribers who appointed John Finley and others Commissioners to purchase property for Tinkling Spring, 14 August 1741. (Wilson, p. 84) Was on muster list of Capt. John Christian in 1742 (Chalkley 2:508) On 18 September 1747, George and "tithables" appeared on a road order---probably William and David (Chalkley 1:32). On 18 Feburary 1763 , George and two sons appeared on road orders (Chalkley 1:103) He had court claims for service to militia in 1755 (Wilson, p. 145) On 21 August 1760, he appraised property of Robert Gibson along with William Caldwell and John Finley. On 18 March 1765, George gave (sold?) 130 acres of his property to his son, William. (Chalkley 3:419)
