G. Grampa Cortes (pronounced as Court) was active and impish to end; asked G.Gramma if he could "just lie down and die"; she said okay and he did.. She later said that "had she known he was serious she would have said no". He was such a big kidder that it was often difficult to take his comments too seriously. They were Founders of DM Asbury Meth. Church. He was Fitch Shampoo teamster (really drove horse wagon) after giving up his dairy business of many years to his son, Orville (later that dairy became known as DM Anderson-Erickson Dairy, the largest dairy in Iowa).

See death certificate and obituary in my files (also several photos). Charlotte Short (Vissat) said that her records tell that Cortes and Ida were married by a Rev. Ladeley of Winterset, IA, witnessed by Martha Turbett and Elizabeth Braught (see photocopy of their wedding gift Bible page with same data plus other family records).
Ralph and Gene Braught (grandsons) recalled (taped interview) that Cortes had a dairy, was a teamster for Fitch Shampoo Co., worked for Chamberlain Medicine Co, and after retirement worked as custodian at Asbury Meth. Church (which he helped found). On Cortes' death certificate, wife Ida listed his occupation as truck driver living at 1636 E.14th, DM at time of death.

See 1880-1900 Madison Co. Iowa Marriages, pg 19, including Cortes C. Braught, 21, b. OH s/o Franklin C. Braught and Mary E. Thrapp married there 31 Aug 1880 to Ida Catherine Motely, 20, b. Indiana to James Motley and Martha Owen.

See Birth Records of Warren County, IA. through 1920, recording a son (third child **) born to Cortes C. Braught and Ida C. Motley on 22 Aug. 1890 at Lincoln Twsp.. **Gene Braught thought this child was to be named Frank and died near birth date. That record also shows Ida, age 29 and Cortes, age 30. Need death record of this third child, but will use name of Frank (as suggested by Gene) until record is located.
I was given the gold and silver sugar and cream spoon set that were part of their wedding gifts from Corte's father (Charles Franklin Braught). I was also given the engraved gold watch that was owned by step-g. g. grandfather Turbett. Those two items are left to my youngest son, Matthew Clark Braught, in my last will (with oral instructions to him that they are never to leave the direct family line and surname possession, but to be displayed to any direct family member upon request). They may be the oldest known family items.

It appears that Cortes (and Ida with eldest son, Homer ?) purchased federal land in South Dakota Aurora County May 14, 1887 (filed at the Montana State Office Doc 11814 Ser. SDMTAA 029589. In 1889 his father apparently did the same, and in 1892 purchased even more in that same area. David E. (son of David) purchased several federal SD lands in Davison, Aurora, and Perkins County. Cecil R. Braught also purchased several plots of federal lands in Perkins County, SD from 1909 to 1912. All of the Perkins County lands were filed in the Lemmon Dist. Office. I assume that it was on this land purchased by Cortes that the second son, Orville, was born. I recall ggrandmother, Ida, telling me that she did not like the Indians and snakes of SD, so they returned to Iowa by 1889.
