Ruth died of cancer at the home of her daughter, Charlotte, in Marin Co., CA. DM, IA register obituary reads: "Mrs. Ruth M. Short, 71, of San Diego, CA, a native of Des Moines, died of cancer Friday in a San Francisco hospital, relatives have learned. She had been ill 2 1/2 years. Mrs Short was born in Des Moines, graduated from East High School and attended Simpson College in Indianola. She moved to California about 1943. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John B. Runnels of Tiburon, Cal; a son, Rollins M. Short of West Des Moines, a brother, O.E. Braught of Des Moines, and four grandchildren."
