To check:Born before parents' marriage

Note birth date for F.C. is before date of marriage for parents, but there is considerable documentation to suggest this was correct. If concerned about this, remember that many German marriages were common law until they could find an ordained pastor. At Iowa Weslyan College I found a record of death certificate #77-97-262 for F. C. Braught died 20 Feb. 1897. Note: Polk County is #77, probably part of the coded certificate.

See 1959 DAR report of Putnam Co., OH marriages 1834-1877 by Ruth H. Pierce found at Allen Co., IN Public Library #1307885: Franklin C. Brought married Mary E. Thrap on Jan. 1, 1857.
See Iowa death certificate, etc. in files (also photos). F.C. Braught cert. #77-97-262 date of death February 28, 1897 at Des Moines, Polk Co., IA, but the date filed is listed as Nov. 12, 1897 (9 months after death). Cause of death given as gangarene of foot, general disability. Married, buried at Woodland Cemetery March 3, 1897. Apparently the undertaker and physician failed to promptly file their reports.

See 1860 Ohio US Census June 28, Roll#227b; PUBL pg.129 for Putnam Co, Blanchard Twsp.: F.C.,31,born PA; Mary,27 born OH; Clara,3 b. OH; Cort 3/12 b.OH. Moved from Dauphin Co. PA with parents in 1835 (farmers). In addition to Franklin C,48; Mary E.,43; Cortes,20; and Barbara B.,3; the 1880 US Census for Jackson Twsp., Warren, Co. IA shows adopted son, J.S. MUSSLEMAN, born 1872, Laura B. CASHMAN, age 18 (servant) and Soloman HORNES, age 26 (servant) living there (not there = daughter Clara, age 23). Note that daughter Clara married Ed. Cashman, so this may have been their daughter, but almost certainly some relation.

Despite many years spread between children, there were apparently only three. FC remained to sell Gilboa, OH farm (see photos, etc.) after mother died of Cholera and others went to Warren Co.,IA.
Josephine M. Campbell's will mentioned "Ollie WATTS, heir of Franklin Braught, dec.." (may be US Secy. Interior Ollie Watts family of same OK-KS area as Campbell), but not likely this same Franklin.
G.G.Grampa FC grave stone in DM Woodland Cem. (lot #12) is similar to his mother's in Gilboa, OH corn field (see photos). In dau. Clara's court permit to marry Cashman, the clerk wrote FC Braucht, father of Clara, but he signed his name FC Braught spelling on same document without corrections. Also, consider implications of her age still needing a parental signature at that time. G/C spelling repeatedly demonstrated as not a likely hint of different branches. From 1880 IA census below, she may have been age
See Putnam Co.,OH Deed Book Vol.1, pg 331, dated 20 Sep. 1855 where Franklin Braught sold Outlot 3 Original Town to Isaac Wynkoop (old map shows this or adjacent land sold Mar 30, 1849). At Gilboa, OH visit, Mrs. Conine cautioned that in those days lands were often transferred quickly due to gambling with stakes of real estate.

See Iowa Census for 1838-70 by Ancestry. Com showing Franklin Brought at Warren Co., IA, pg. 337, IA # 01843166 (of WPA records, I presume). I should learn the date of this actual record, perhaps with added data. When he sold above land in 1855, it was likely when he and wife moved to Iowa (Warren Co.). Check 1860 and 1870 Warren Co., IA census (probably Jackson Twp.). 1870 census for Iowa, Warren Co., White Oak Twp. house 3 and family 3 (poor copy) shows Braught, Franklin, 34 farmer b. PA with Mary E., 34, b. OH; Clara, 9, b. OH; and Cortes, ?, b. OH. The next three neighbors were of Shutt families. 1880 Iowa Census; Warren Co., Jackson Twp. shows Frank C. Braught, 48 farmer, he and both parents born in PA; wife Mary E., 43, she and both parents born in OH; son Cortes C., 20 born in OH, fa. born PA and Mo. born OH; grand daughter Barbara B. 3 she and both parents born in IA; J.S. Mussleman, male 8 adopted (occ=farm laborer) born in IA; Fa. born in VA, Mo. born in OH; Solomon Hornes, male 26 domestic servant - he and both parents born in INd; and Laura B. Cashman, 18, servant, born in IA with both parents born in OH. [ I think this Laura B. Cashman, 18, is actually Clara Laura Braught, who married Edward J. Cashman at Indianola, Warren Co., IA 9 Dec. 1875, but was apparently moved back in with her parents by June 1, 1880). See Des Moines, Iowa 1897 Directory pg. 144 reporting Braught, Franklin C. died Feb 28, 1987. The Woodland Cemetery of Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa is located at Harding and High Ave on Woodland Ave, but records are found with the sextant at Glendale Cemetery on 56th University Ave. I have good photos of this large grave stone that looks similar to his mother's at Gilboa, OH. See group photo of all David Braught, Sr. children (including a very aged Franklin Charles and inserted Lorenzo photo) stored in Braught 32 (David) album. I analyze that the date of that photo to be shortly before the 1897 death of Franklin (he appears very frail).
