Margaret Marks' Braught birth date is calculated from her tombstone data at Gilboa, OH (during cholera epidemic there, but not certain if she died of that). The stone says she died at 42 yrs. 2 m. 14 and d. on 14 Aug. 1852 = born 31 May 1810 (a year older than husband David, Sr.). That stone is located in a field just North of a Gilboa Park that has a huge plastic cow on Hwy. 224. Nancy Conine said that stone is on a farm now owned by Mable "Baker? (penmanship) family" After Margaret died, the family (except F.C.) moved immediately to IA (see Warren Co. History). Need search of Marks family, probably in Mifflin Co., PA. Also seek exact site of marriage.
An 11 Mar 2003 Email from Ruth Wilheim ([email protected]) from Putnam Co, OH Library responded to my query about Braught people in Gilboa around 1850. She wrote that she found a note from Marguerite Conine that said Mary Ann Braught did not die of cholera («u»the stone is named Mary Ann Braught, not Martha with date Aug. 14, 1852 aged 42y 2m 14 d.) «/u» That cemetery was known as the Gilboa Cemetery until the Cholera epidemic. She found Franklin Charles Braught in 1860 and 1870 census (forgot to mention that was in Iowa). The only mention of John Braught found was pertaining to a 5-1-1858 newspaper article (no mention of the paper name) for a Sheriff's land sale 6-5-1858 to sell a lot and half owned by the late John Braught (no mention of the location, etc.). She could not find an obituary for Martha Braught and said there were rarely obituaries at that time, particularly when her family moved to Iowa then. She would send copies of these data for $1. I responded not to order those copies with thanks.
I found a report that Margaret Marks was born 3 Jun 1809 at Mifflin Co, PA; married 23 Sep 1832 in PA and died at Gilboa, OH 14 Aug 1852. Oldest child, Franklin, was reportedly born in 1831. What is my documentation here (goof)?
26 Jul 2000 Email from Donna (Pete) Terian [[email protected]) wrote requesting my data on Margaret Marks as she had an ancestor married to Wallace Marks of Lewistown, PA. I sent what I had and received no added communications from her. See PAMIFFLI-L @rootsweb.com.
Ancestry.com webpage data records a George Marks in 1743, a marriage on Feb. 19, 1769 between Elisha Marks and Sarah Smith, and a marriage between Rachel Marks & Alexander Graydon in Feb. 1747. In the Index to Will and Intestate Records of Lancaster Co., PA 1729-1850 pg. 87 is a reference to Nicholas Marks, 1832, Book F vol. 1 pg 268 (but I have no idea if these are relatives)
In Brought line files; see Ann Brought, dau of Daniel, married David Marks and notes on David Marks of Mifflin Co., PA. The 1800 PA. Census Index, pg. 195 there are many Marks people in Dauphin Co. where David, Jr. was born. We have some records that Margaret was born in Mifflin Co. On pg 292 there are numerous Mifflin Co. Mark and Marks people, but so far I have not thoroughly researched this family (and should do so one day).
US Census 1850 OH; Putnam Co., Blanchard Twp shows David Braught on pg. 35. Also see the OH 1857 Census showing him at the same location. Remember to use caution with the two David Braught families of Blanchard Twp. (Hancock or Putnam Counties). The Putnam Co. family is my direct line. Knowing that David moved to Warren Co, IA in 1852, leaving eldest son, Franklin, to tend the farm, it is curious that he is still listed as there in 1857 (Did he still own that property?).
In Putnam Co., OH History by Kinder: "Cholera at Gilboa in 1852 was 19 cases, 14 died, many fled the village", pg 268; and "In 1848 an epidemic of cholera almost decimated the village incorporated in 1848" - may be referring to Gilboa, but indicates that cholera was a constant threat in this county (even sometimes referred to as the "Black Swamp"). There are obviously some curious ideas regarding birth dates of first two children and marriage date. Only conjectures exist at present, but data seems to be accurate. See LDS#AFN:1zgb-rbv (no added data, except listed as spouse of David Braucht).
Carole J. Schetter ([email protected]) replied to my Putnam Co., OH help search 28 Feb 2003 with report of the Blanchard Twp. V. 7 pg. 188 about the Cholera Cemetery with 21 entries, including Maryann BRAUGHT, died Aug. 14, 1852, age 42y 2m 14 days with the note from pg 187 that "Up until the time of the cholera epidemic, this cemetery was known as the Gilboa Cemetery. Some of the people buried there did not die from cholera, as in the case of Mary Ann Braught, who is laid to rest there". Ms. Schetter also provided some data for John and Ursela Brought 1854 Ottawa (see my notes in Braught 32 folder). (question: was her name Margaret or Maryann and was one AKA?).
My Feb. 13, 1997 search for Marks on Family Tree Maker's Genealogy (ignoring my own data):1743 Dec. is George Marks; 1747 Feb marriage Rachel Marks & Graydon, Alexander; 1768 Feb. 19 marriage of Elisha Marks and Sarah Smith; 1775 Aug 25 Mary McAllister and Thomas Cromby (See Imboden-McAllister).
15 Aug 2000 search on rootsweb.com NewDauphin County,PA Query Forum I hit an item that day for John N. Mark and his wife Augusta J. Morelock with daughter Birdie V. Mark b. 1877 posted by Dorinda Shepley. No notion of a relationship or location. [email protected]. I responded to her
4 May 1997 Email from Robin ([email protected]) PO Box 11032, Tallahassee, FL 32302 had replied to my Mifflin Co., PA query for Brought people there. She mentioned Howard Brought, b. 1833 Mifflin Co., PA but had no other data or references.
Two different Harriet Marks, b.1810/1830 are found living with different Braught families (census): 1860 KS Charles R. Campbell and Josephine Braught; Harriet age 30; plus1870 IA (Indianola) David Braught Sr. and Sarah 2nd wife/1st wife = Margaret in OH.
