Facts and Events
Years of research confusion was stimulated by the records of two David Braughts of Blanchard Twp (one Putnam County, and the other of Hancock Co., OH). See 1850 Census for Blanchard Twp, Putnam Co., OH listing this entire family intact there on 26 July 1850 (detailed below). Warren County, IA records (first uncovered by aunt Kay Bellman Braught) helped establish the basis for verifying this family. Many notes on David (SR) and family in files not yet on computer. David Sr. took his family (except Oldest son, F.C.) from Gilboa, Putnam County, OH to Warren Co., IA after the Cholera epidemic of 1852 that killed his wife Margaret Marks. He later (1857) married Sarah Lyon in IA (they had no children). Some notes call him D.C. Braught. Younger brother Dan'l journal mentions seeing brother David at Gilboa, OH in 1846. 1850 Census Putnam Co., OH (Blanchard Twsp. : Roll 432-723, pg. PUBL34) show David Braught,40 farmer; Margaret 40; Franklin 20; farmer; Lorenzo N. 16; Patterson 15, Josephine 12; Godfrey 10; Lozetta W. 9; Samuel M. 7; and David C. 4/12). All of these children except oldest, Franklin, and youngest, David, were in school). Although the microfilm was very dark at the bottom (this family the bottom of the page), it appeared that Parents and children down to and including Luzetta were born in PA, but it was too dark to be certain of the data on birth place for those younger. Other reports tell that Cloid and younger sibling were born in OH. Oklahoma HIstorical Society, Wiley Post Historical Bldg., Oklahoma City, OK responded July 8, 1985 to my May 20, 1985 query for Braught data. They found Friday May 23, 1919, pg. 1 col. 7 and pg. 2 an article "First White Man to Electric Chair" - T.R. Braught in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Also see their report of Claude G. or Claude Godfrey Braught in Indian Documents and 1900 Indian Territory Census. Also they found Samuel Braught in 1900 Census for Richland,Labette,KS. They found in 1850 census (forgot to add state of OH) David Braught of Blanchard town, Putnam County (also not accurate...should be Township, not Blanchard Town). 1854 special Ohio census shows a David Braught at Putnam Co., Blanchard Twp, but there is some concern about that being entirely accurate; knowing that this David left Blanchard Twp. in 1852 with his children , except for Franklin who stayed behind to tend and sell the property there. This needs added research: did they record him there because his property had not yet be sold but still owned by him and merely maintained by son Franklin? Did David actually return to the Gilboa homestead (perhaps to check on Franklin and the property briefly when the 1854 state census taker visited? Iowa Marriages 1851-1900 Warren Co. (Ancestry.com) shows David Braught married Sarah Lyon 21 May 1857. 1860 Warren Co., IA census shows Braucht, David, 50; Sarah, 30; Geo.W., 23; Godfrey, 21; Patterson, 22; Samuel,16; David, 9 This list is interesting in that Patterson is out of order and others are missed; which hints that the information was probably given by a neighbor or friend to recorder, who did not actually visit this family (not an entirely rare practice in census taking, unfortunately). 1870 Warren Co.,IA Census (11 July 1870) shows White Oak Twp pg.337. House 2 family 2: David Sr, 57 b. PA, farmer with $2720 real propery and $??71 (poor copy) in personal property with Indianola P.O. address; Sarah, 52 b. KY keeping house; David, J, 20, b. OH; Mary E. OWEN, 28 house keeping b. IN; Peter LEBO, 28 b. Penn farming; Joseph Hafe? (very poor copy), 28 b. H??; Harriett MARKS, 6 (or 60?), b. PA. (but I need to record more details from that record). Next door is brother Franklin Braught and wife Mary with 2 of their children. Iowa Census 1838-70 (Ancestry.com) shows US 1870 Iowa Census Warren Co., Jackson Twp. with David Braught ID# IA01839818. 1879 Directory of Jackson Twp., Warren Co., Iowa includes the article on "David Brought, farmer, secon 25, PO Indianaola, born in Dauphin County, PA May 17, 1811 where he was raised. He was married Sept. 23, 1832 to Miss Margaret Marks, a native of Mifflin County, PA. By this union there were seven children, now living: F.C., L.N., Joshephine (now Mrs. Campell of KS), C.G., Resetta (now Mrs. James White, living in KS), Samuel M. and David E. having lost one daughter who died when an infant; his son Peterson, at the age of 24 yrs. in 1860 strangely disappeared without apparent cause and has not been heard of since, though every efforts has been made in his behalf. Aug. 14, 1852, Mrs. Brought died of cholera, leaving her bereaved husband the care of 7 small children. In the fall of the same year he removed to this county, arriving her Nov. 8, 1852. Mr. Brought had used up all his funds when he arrived at Burlington, but succeeded in effecting a loan of ten dollars which enabled him to reach his destination bankrupt in money, but rich in pluck, energy, and a noble purpose. He has, by economy and good management, succeeded in surrounding himself and family with a splendid home where hospitality is extended not only to friends, but strangers. Genial, whole-souled and generous-hearted, he now in his old days is loved by all who know him, owns an extensive farm of 640 acres with a grand old orchard, and extensive grapersy and 125 stand of Italian bees." That same report shows D.E. Brought, farmer and stock-dealer, sec. ...; Brought, F.C. farmer section 25. Also Peter Lebo, farmer section 2, Based upon the records of the Bur. of Land Management, it appears that David applied for federal lands in SD, Aurora County in both 1889 (7/26/1889 Montana State Office Doc. 8522 SDMTAA 029205) and 1892 (2/23/92 Montana State Office Doc 795 SDMTAA 029536). Because his grandson, Cortes C. was the first Braught to apply for federal lands in SD 5/14/1887, it appears that he encouraged his father and uncle David E. Braught to also file for federal lands in Perkins County, SD. In 1909 Cecil R. Braught also filed for land in Perkins, SD (he filed for several plots soon afterwards 1880 Warren Co., IA (Jackson Twp) census (clearly readable) shows David, Male 68 at home; born in PA, parents both born PA; Sarah, wife, age 62 (she and both parents born in KY), son David Jr., age 30, farmer, born OH, both parents born PA; d-l (dau.in.law) Louisa (note: this is Louisa OWEN) born Ind (Indiana) with both of her parents born in KY (see 1870 census data conflict and Mary E. Owen with the family); and three children of David Jr. (all born in IA with father born in OH and mother born in Ind.): Stella, female 8, Fredrick, male 4, and Cecil, male 8/12 (1880 census is dated June 1). Also living there were George Hinnis, single age 19 b. IA; Alexander Creager, single age 20 b. IA; and John Boone, single age 21, b. IA (likely young hired hands). They were living next door to Franklin C. Braught ( David's oldest son). Census Roll # 368. pg 411B. See also FHL (Family History Library) film 1254353. See photo from Connie McGruder that she received from her aunt Inez that had written on back "Grandpa David Braught, Sr." (likely taken in his later years, perhaps about age 70 at Des Moines, Iowa). |
