Facts and Events
There is serious question regarding the actual death of Adam Sr. Braught. His assumed death in 1833 appears to have been a ruse to abandon the family and move to Blair County, PA where he applied for vet. grants in 1852 under a different surname spelling. He may have remarried (Sophia -----, illegal marriage) and had at least one son (Joel) after 1833. It seems that he committed suicide (hung himself) in a Mifflin Co, PA poor house (4/26/60) after all of this (see Mifflin Co., PA obituaries 1822-1880 by McClenahen, pg.30 # 140). This is the death date being used here with some logic. This does not quite explain why he applied for bounty land from Blair County, PA, but I will use this data from Mifflin Co., PA also noting that his daughter-in-law Margaret Marks (spouse of eldest son, David) was from Mifflin Co., PA. and apparently familiar area to him. I suspect that he used the Blair Co. area to apply as another ploy to avoid being located by his family in Dauphin Co. Find 21 NOV. 1850 Bounty Land Warrant #25316 (40 acres) filed at Morrison's Cove, Blair Co.,PA at age 61 and 11 APR. 1855 Warrant #46260 (120 acres) filed at Huston Twsp (age 68) of Pension Claim W.O. 7048 V.A., Bk.wt. 11,966-160-55 Wash.,DC. He served as private in 152 REG. Rifleman Co.6 of PA Militia from Dauphin Co. under Capt. Isaac Smith and Lt. Wm. Cochran from 2 SEP- 2DEC 1814, according to Ser.7, V.1 and S6 VII of PA Archives. A copy of the marriage certificate was part of the pension applications by wife, Rebecca. History of Dauphin and Lebanon Counties (Engle) pg.332 show one Adam Brecht of Bethel had three children; Christian, Adam and Elizabeth (Mrs. Gotlieb Rhoad). Halifax Twsp.. was in Upper Paxtang Twsp. of Lancaster County from 1729-1885, then was renamed Halifax Twsp. of Lancaster County 1785-1803, and finally renamed Halifax Twsp. of Dauphin County, PA since 1803 when it was reorganized into Dauphin County. Key Christ Lutheran Church of Tulpehocken marriage cert. translation was Adam Braucht/ Adam Brocht married by REV. GEORGE LOCHMAN (see Imboden/Sweigart/McAllister data with his name), witnessed by Alexander McAllister and Philip Wolfersberger,Sr. This cert. states Adam, son of deceased Daniel Brocht, and Rebecca Imboden, dau. of Phillip Imboden were married April 23, 1810. This was the first documentation I obtained that Adam's father's name was Daniel. It also reconfirmed Rebecca Imboden's guardian was Alexander McAllister. Phillip Wolfsberger was an officer of the unit where Adam served in the War of 1812 (see military archives documents). Christ Lutheran Church of Tulpehocken records also show a marriage between Johann Adam Bracht and Ann Margaretha Sauter on 25 May 1792. These could easily be brothers or even uncle-nephew in the same church community at near dates. Of course, the German standard use of Christian name of Johann until adulthood could also suggest that this was the same Adam with two marriages 18 yrs. apart. If that were true, his birthdate would have been closer to 1772 and he would have been about 60 when his youngest daughter, Susan Sophia, was born (plus even older if he did give birth to an illegitimate son even later). Logic would favor a relative more than the same man. We know for sure that our Adam married our Rebecca Imboden on 23 April 1810. Christ Lutheran Church of Tulpehocken is now part of Bernville in Berks County, PA. (see photo, provided by Deidre Cox, of this church still in use in 1999, approx. 200 yrs. of service). 14 JAN. 1813 Adam (Brecht) bought 92 acres of Dauphin Co. from John Sawyer. 15 SEP. 1825 John Freeburn, Henry Baughman and he were trustees buying 85 sq. perches for school house at Halifax Twsp., Dauphin Co. Dec. 1833 he and wife Rebecca sold tracts of contiguous property in Jackson and Halifax Twsps.. (spelled name Braucht).
