In History of Warren County, Iowa 1908 by Martin, pg 195, Cloid G. Braught and Samuel M. Braught are listed with Company G (total 6 men), 17th Vol. Iowa Infantry. Much data for this family was later confirmed by Hildred Hughes Ables of Ottawa Gen.Soc. 700 Garfield, Miami, OK 74354 (see letters in files).

Nelson Case History of Labette Co., KS on pg. 116 for Richland Twsp.= "During 1866 Samuel Braught and Lorenzo Braught settled in the Northeast part of the township North of Labette Creek". Obituary in Oswego Independent 13 Nov 1908 pg.3 Col.4 has much detail, including Samuel Braught walked into this county May 17, 1868; returned for visit to OH for marriage.

Pres. of Old Soldiers Reunion Assn., he was a prisoner at the infamous Andersonville, GA Confederate POW camp. A military report of June 29, 1864 states (among other information) that Samuel M. Braught was captured Oct. 13 1864 at Tilton, GA and imprisoned at Andersonville (infamous CSA POW camp, but was paroled on April 18, 1865 and released at Vicksburg, Miss. History tells how those prisoners were marched from Andersonville to escape Sherman's march, but when supplies dwindled so badly that even guards had no food rations, they released the prisoners. The History of Warren County, Iowa 1908 by Martin, pg 195, he is listed with his brother Cloid G. as one of six members of Company G. 17th Iowa Volunteer Infantry (Civil War).

Documents in my folder for Samuel M. Braught include Declaration for Original Invalid Pension of 12 Nov. 1847 with much handwritten data signed by Samuel M. Braught listing numerous injuries. A War Department of June 29, 1882 with much handwritten data concludes that there was found no evidence of alleged disabilities, but that the Reglt Hospital records were not on file. Under Act of April 19, 1908 Declaration for Widow's Pension signed by Rachel T. Braught with considerable handwritten data of RR#5 (Richland Twp.)Oswego, Labette Co, KS dated 19 Dec. 1908 with certificate # 29.701 dated 21 Dec 1908. Also, I have four Muster Roll sheets (one photocopy) for Cloid G. Braught of Company B of 17th Iowa includes note that he was known to be in "Pioneer Corps." a Andersonville, GA July and Aug 1864 plus one sheet stating that he was detailed on Pioneer Corps Jan 18, 1863. Non veteran. Deed books show James White and Luzetta M. White selling land to Samuel M. Braught.

At death, he left wife and 4 children: Walter of Lamar,CO; Mrs. Josephine Fowler of Chetopa; KS, Merritt and Guy. (all present at the funeral except Walter who had to return to CO just before services). Labette Co. Deed Books show James White and Luzetta M. White selling land to Samuel M. Braught. He apparently had some challenge for his pension application that he was not injured in the war, so he listed about 15 health problems from having his right foot run over by a wagon, measles and diphtheria, lungs, heart, spleen, bladder, kidneys, and left hip all bad and all from his war experiences. Someone had apparently listed him as S.S. Brought, but eventually it was determined that it had to be S.M. Braught as no other person there with similar name in any way. He did obtain his pension.

Caution about Sam and Rachel Braucht of Hancock, OH 1850 census -- NOT THE SAME FAMILY (see son, Sam Guy notes for details and also see Richard Praetor collection for this other family he incorrectly identified as this family ... an error very easily made without careful documentation ). See 1900 Soundex for KS census (Samuel Braught). Oklahoma HIstorical Society, Wiley Post Historical Bldg., Oklahoma City, OK responded July 8, 1985 to my May 20, 1985 query for Braught data. They found Friday May 23, 1919, pg. 1 col. 7 and pg. 2 an article "First White Man to Electric Chair" - T.R. Braught in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Also see their report of Claude G. or Claude Godfrey Braught in Indian Documents and 1900 Indian Territory Census. Also they found Samuel Braught in 1900 Census for Richland,Labette,KS. They found in 1850 census (forgot to add state of OH) David Braught of Blanchard town, Putnam County

On 18 July 1997 during my visit to the large Chetopa, KS cemetery we arrived late in the day and could not locate the stone for Samuel or family. There were many Civil War veteran stones there, and many of them unmarked except for CW metal stars. At Oswego Museum was found a Chetopa, KS Oak Hill Cemetery book set (I used A-K book looking only for Braught names): S. M. Braught, age 65 Lot 5, Blk 18. Died 11 Nov. 1908. Also Mrs. R.T. Braught, Lot 5 Blk 18. Died 1926. However, I could not find the section markers at the large cemetery. The book added "gas" for S. M. and I was advised by the curator that it indicated something about preparation of the burial box. Chetopa had a Historical Museum plus a library (both small and on main St.). The Oak Hill Cemetery is located about 1/2 mi. off the highway just South of Chetopa. 11 June 1880 US Census for Richland Twp, Labetter Co., KS shows Samuel Braught, 38 b. OH (parents born PA/PA), farmer; Rachel, 39, wife b. OH keeping house (parents born OH/OH) . ; children all born KS Walter, 7 at school ; Mary J., 3 at home; and Samuel G., 1 at home. 16 Jan 1900 census of Richland Twsp, Labette County, KS lists Braught, Samuel M. head, w (white), m(male) b. May 1843 age 57, married 28 yrs; Rachel T. wife, wf (white female), May 1841 age 58 married 28 yrs, 6 children, 4 living. Also Josephine M. Braught, dau. wf, b.May 1877 age 20 single; Samuel G., son Wm b. Aug 1879, age 20, single, farm laborer; and Merritt S., son, Wm b. 1885 age 14 single. Listed on same property was Charles C. Taylor, boarder, Wm __ b. May 1860 age 40, parents both born in OH, farmer, single. Labette County, KS Deed Books show James M. and Luzetta Braught selling property to Samuel M. Braught
