Thomas Grant was baptised on 14th October 1838 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Mary Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, who variously worked as a blacksmith, labourer and fisherman. Thomas appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings at Sidlesham.
On 18th October 1858, aged 20, Thomas married a Julia Lambard, who was 24. Between 1859 and 1876 they had eight children (one boy and seven girls) baptised at Sidlesham. In every census from 1861 to 1891 Thomas was living at Sidlesham with his wife Julia and their children. Thomas generally worked as a fisherman, but in 1871 he was described as a brewery labourer.
Julia died in 1897, aged 62. Four years after her death Thomas was living at nearby Selsey. He later returned to Sidlesham, where he appears in the 1911 census. Thomas died in 1917, aged 78.
