Alfred Grant was baptised on 2nd December 1831 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Mary Ann Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, a labourer and later fisherman. Alfred appears with his parents and siblings living at Mill in Sidlesham parish in the 1841 census. In 1851, Alfred and his brother Stephen were both lodging with their sister Harriet.

In 1852, when he was 20 years old, Alfred was charged with assaulting a William Wood and fined 14 shillings and 6 pence. His brother Stephen also assaulted William Wood, who was the local constable, six months later.

Alfred married a Sarah Upfield in 1857. She was originally from the nearby town of Petworth, but they married and settled in Sidlesham. Between 1858 and 1881 they had twelve children at Sidlesham. Alfred appears to have spent all his adult life working as a fisherman. They lived in the Mill area of Sidlesham, and several of the censuses show they were living at Island Cottage, which is still there today on the road now known as Mill Lane.

Alfred died in 1906. He was about 74 years old. Sarah outlived him by about fifteen years and died in 1921.
