Edmund Grant was baptised on 24th July 1836 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Mary Ann Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, a fisherman. Edmund appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Mill in Sidlesham parish. In 1851 the family was living at a place called "Late Ransoms" (probably named after a previous occupant) in Sidlesham, and Edmund was working as a fisherman.
In 1857, aged 21, Edmund married Ellen Bailey, who was originally from the neighbouring parish of Pagham. They moved to Portsmouth, where they appear in the 1861 census with two daughters. Edmund was described in the 1861 census as being a superannuated seaman, despite being only 24 years old at the time, suggesting he had perhaps been pensioned out of the navy due to ill health.
It would seem that Edmund died some time in the early 1860s, when he would still have only been in his twenties, although his death record has yet to be found. However, Ellen remarried in 1864, describing herself as a widow.
