Stephen Grant was baptised on 20th November 1829 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Mary Ann Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, a labourer and later fisherman. Stephen appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Mill in Sidlesham parish. In 1851 he was working as a fisherman and and still living at Sidlesham, but this time with his sister Harriet Binstead.
In 1852, Stephen was charged with assaulting one William Woods, the constable of Sidlesham parish. He was found guilty and fined £1, and had to pay 11s 6d costs. If he was unable to pay, he would have to spend one month in jail. The newspapers do not record whether he paid the fine or went to jail.
In 1864, aged 35, Stephen married a Maria Prior at Sidlesham. She was about 12 years younger than him, being 23 when they married, although she already had a daughter who was nearly three years old. Stephen and Maria stayed at Sidlesham, having a son named Henry baptised there in 1865 and a daughter named Annie in 1867.
Less than four months after Annie's baptism Stephen died, being buried at Sidlesham on 6th July 1867. He was 37. At the time of his death, both his parents were still alive and living in Sidlesham. Maria outlived him over 42 years, and married again eight years after his death.
