Henry Grant was baptised on 5th March 1865 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of a charwoman named Maria Grant, formerly Prior, and her husband Stephen Grant, a fisherman. In 1867, when Henry was just two years old, his father died. The 1871 census finds Henry living at Sidlesham with his widowed mother, his older half sister Mary Ann and his younger sister Annie.

In 1875, Maria married again. Her second husband was a carpenter named George Fullinger, who thus became Henry's stepfather. In both the 1881 and 1891 censuses Henry was working as an agricultural labourer and living in the Mill area of Sidlesham with his mother, stepfather and various siblings and half-siblings. Henry has yet to be researched after 1891.
