Nancy parents,were of Scotch Irish desent. Her father Andrew Mitchell her mother, Mary McGowin, were married in Ireland and emigrated from County Limerick, and settled in the Scotch Irish Colony in Western Pennsylvania about 1750. Andrew's brother, David and his sister Isabella, who had married a Stewart, came with him and settled in the same colony. In 1752 Andrew and his wife Mary, his brother David and his children came to Orange County, North Carolina and settled on New Hope Creek. The first court in the County (Orange County being formed in 1753), met at the home of John Gray on Eno River. Andrew Mitchell was one of the first Justices in the first court of Orange County. He was a member of the Parrish of St. Matthew established in 1752, and was a vestryman. This parish was located at Hillsboro, North Carolina and was a branch of the established church of England.He was known as "Squire Mitchell of New Hope Creek."
