Samuel Kerr ;came to Tennessee buy wagon train with his father's family in 1808. After his marriage to Anne Paisley, he settled in Giles county, Tennessee. Anne Praisley's people were from Praisley, Scotland. Samuel Kerr was a slave holding farmer and planter in Giles County, where he lived all of his life after coming to Tennessee. He died there about 1880, being past 90 years of age. His age made him a non-combatant during the Civil War, but his home being along the dividing line of the two armies when they were fighting in Giles County, made him a target for both sides and he was repeatedly ambushed and scarred by the Confederates and the Federals.
