He enlisted, as a private, at Harrisville, Michigan on 11 August 1862 in Company E, 23rd Infantry. for a period of three years, and was mustered in 12 September 1862 at East Saginaw, Michigan; and, mustered out on 28 June 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina. Served as a teamster in the supply train; Campbell Station, siege of Knoxville, Rocky River Ridge, Columbia, Franklin, Nashville and Williamston, and was present at the surrender of Johnston. He was hit several times by spent and glancing bullets. He received an Honorable Discharge/

After the Civil War he married Sarah Wood and together they homesteaded the CHAPELLE FARM (Chapelle`s Corners and M-72 West of Harrisville, Michigan). The farm remained in the family until 1927 when it was sold to Francis James' brother-in-law. Percy Somers.

He was a member of the John Earl Post, Grand Army of the Republic, AuSable, Michigan. He never missed a campfire or military gathering.

He was a county Deputy Sheriff.
