George W. LaChapelle was one of the first Deputy Sheriffs of the County; and, helped to convey the first prisoner to the Alpena County Jail, then located in Saginaw, Michigan.

He was elected as the first Sheriff of Alcona County in 1870 when Alcona County was separated from Alpena County. He served for two years as Sheriff.

He was a Justice of the Peace for thirty-five years after being elected in April 1911 for four more years. He was Postmaster in Harrisville for four years, appointed in 1893. He was Deputy State Game and Fish Warden for two years. He was a member of the Village Council of Harrisville for five years. After the town was incorporated as a City in 1905 he was elected as a member of the Board of Aldermen which office gave him a seat on the Board of Supervisors. He was Highway Commissioner for six years, and Street Commissioner. He was Coronor for eight years. A staunch Republican.
