An Aged Mother Enters Eternal Rest

Mrs. Fred Baltz (nee Alwene Wilhemina Zachow [sic]) was born on September 4, 1853, in Friederichshoff, province of Mecklenburg, Germany. On April 25, 1879, she was united in holy wedlock to Fred Baltz. The union was visibly blessed by God, inasmuch as he vouchsafed unto them ten children, one of whom, Minnie, preceded her mother in death. In the same year, 1914, the husband and father also died. In the year 1882, they came to America and settled on a farm near Postville. Later they moved to a farm near Castalia from which place they again moved into the town where the deceased has resided ever since.

On October 29, 1923, she became ill and after all help was to no avail, she consented to an operation on December 7th. This too gave no relief and after lingering on for seven days she answered God's summons on Friday morning, December 14, 1923. The days of her earthly pilgrimage are 70 years, three months and 10 days. She had held membership in Zion's Lutheran church at Castalia for a number of years.

Those left to mourn her death are five sons - August, Carl, Wilhelm, Ernest and Fred Baltz; four daughters, Mrs. Will Gentz, Mrs. Charles Johnson, Mrs. Frank Buhlman and Mrs. Ernest Klaus; two brothers, Carl and Wilhelm Zuchow, still in Germany, and two sisters, Ida and Christina, also in Germany. Also ten grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held from Zion's Lutheran church, Castalia, Monday, Dec. 17th. Rev. Hoferer officiating. Interment in Postville cemetery.
