August C. Baltz, 64, Is Fatally Injured At Garnavillo Friday

Funeral Services Were Held Monday Afternoon

August C. Baltz, 64, of Decorah, was fatally injured Friday afternoon at Garnavillo when he was struck by a truck as he was walking across highway 52 in the business district. Witnesses said that the rear vision mirror, which protrudes from the left side of the truck, struck him and knocked him to the pavement. As the truck was not moving rapidly it was believed the fall to the pavement caused Mr. Baltz's fatal injuries.

He was rushed to the Decorah hospital, where he passed away Friday evening at 8:30 o'clock.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Willis-Brandt Funeral Home in Decorah. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

Mr. Baltz was well known in Postville, where he often painted signs. He was born in Germany on December 6, 1876, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Baltz, and after coming to this country lived north of town with his parents. He attended the rural schools and later went to Breckenridge college, Decorah. For the last 30 years he had been located at Decorah, where he followed the sign painting profession.

He is survived by his wife, four brothers, Fred A. Baltz and Wm. H. Baltz of Postville, Ernest J. Baltz of Castalia and Carl Baltz of St. Louis, Mo., and four sisters, Mrs. Wm. Gentz of Luana, Mrs. Lena Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Frank Buhlman and Mrs. Ernest Klaus of Waterloo.
