Walter Welch BIRTH 9 Nov 1726 Ireland DEATH unknown North Carolina, USA
Research of Paul Welch (descendant now deceased) Walter Welch lived on or near Buffalo [now Tinker Creek] in the 1740's until ca. 1765, when he sold out to Col. William Preston. This is present Botetourt County, Virginia, just north of Roanoke, VA. Walter Welch was born ca. 1726 in Virginia or Northern Ireland, and died after 1796. His name appears on the 1778 Rowan County, North Carolina tax roll, along with that of William Welch, who afterwards appears in Burke county records. Migration patterns would indicate that this is the same Walter Welch of Augusta county (later Craig) Virginia. It is felt that Walter Welch left Augusta county after 1758 for Rowan County, North Carolina. Settlement of the Estate of Col. James Patton: William Preston in part for Dayley's and Walter Welch's bond whose land he purchased. My g. g. g. grandfather was William Welch, born ca. 1778 in North Carolina, was probably the youngest son of Walter Welch. A William Welch is on the 1797 Wilkes county tax roll in the same district as Walter Welch was in 1795. William Welch married by 1803. The Wilkes county, N.C. tax roll for 1786 indicates that Walter Welch was 60 years old that year. His birth would have occured about the year 1726, and he was 70 years old at death.

Letter dated 25 Nov 1985 Dear Karolyn, Walter Welch was born on 9 Nov 1726 in Ireland. He came to Virginia as a child, probably during the Irish Famines in the 1740's. I believe his father was Nicholas Welch, born ca. 1695 and died after 1768 in Bedford County, Virginia. Brothers included John Welch who died in 1774 and Nicholas Welch Jr. who died in 1768. Walter Welch left Virginia during the French and Indian War (1750's) for Maryland, and came to North Carolina prior to 1778, the year he is on the Rowan County, NC tax roll. He was in Wilkes County, NC from 1782 to 1796 (on tax rolls), the last year he is on a tax roll in Wilkes County, NC is 1796. A William Weltch in 1797 has part of his farm on Hunting Creek and was under age 21 (no poll) so it looks like our William Welch! In the 1700's, at age 60, a man paid no poll, and in 1786, age 60, this Walter Welch paid "0" poll (born 1726). The Walter Welch of Chatham County, NC came from PA. to NC. before the Revolutionary War. I have his will and a file. Wilkes County, NC records do not have our Walter Welch's probate. No deed records show any land transfer to son William either! Walter Welch was 50 in 1776, so it is doubtful he was in the Rev. War. He had a son James Welch born 1773 in MD., and died 1854 in Jackson County, MO. He must have had a 2nd wife at this time (1770's) who was a lot younger than Walter! No doubt children much older than our William and James existed elsewhere in MD., VA., or NC? Your Cousin, Paul R. Welch
