Samuel Rowe was baptised on 8th November 1818 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, son of a lace maker named Susannah Rowe, formerly Perry, and her husband Samuel Rowe, an ironmonger. Samuel was baptised the same day as his brother George, who was presumably his twin.

On Christmas Day 1839, aged 21, Samuel married Mary Scott. They would go on to have at least six children together. They appear together in the 1841 census living at Bell Pightle in Leighton Buzzard. Samuel gave his occupation as 'army'.

By 1851 Samuel and Mary were living with three children at Brompton near Chatham in Kent, with Samuel described as a corporal in the Royal Marines. Samuel was away from home on the night of the 1861 census, serving on the HMS Trafalgar, which was in the North Atlantic ocean, about 75 miles west of Brittany.

By 1871 Samuel had left the armed forces and moved about 300 miles north to Sunderland, where he found work as a glassmaker. The 1871 census finds Samuel and Mary living at 14 St Cuthbert's Terrace in the town.

Samuel died at the age of 60. He was buried on 30th July 1879 at Sunderland's Bishopwearmouth Cemetery. Mary survived him by nearly six years.
