Samuel Rowe said he was born in Leighton Buzzard in about 1783. His first confirmed sighting is in 1810, when he married Mary Janes there. They went on to have two daughters: Ann in 1813 and Elizabeth in 1815. Both daughters' baptism records described Samuel as a labourer. In 1817, Samuel's wife Mary died, aged 34.

The following year Samuel married a widow named Susannah Hickinbottom, formerly Perry, whose first husband had died two years earlier. Susannah had at least one surviving child from her first marriage, who was also called Elizabeth, but seems to have become known as Eliza, possibly to distinguish her from her step-sister.

Samuel and Susannah went on to have another seven children together, starting with twins, who were baptised less than six months after Samuel and Susannah's marriage. Their youngest four children all died under the age of 7.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses find Samuel and Susannah living in Leighton Buzzard. In 1851 he was working as an ironmonger's labourer. Samuel died in 1857, aged 73. Susannah outlived him by about seven years.
