Mary Scott was baptised on 6th January 1822 at Billington in Bedfordshire, which was then a chapelry in the parish of Leighton Buzzard. She was the daughter of Francis and Mary Scott.

On Christmas Day 1839 she married Samuel Rowe at Leighton Buzzard. They would go on to have at least six children. The 1841 census finds them living at Bell Pightle in Leighton Buzzard. Samuel gave his occupation as 'army'. By 1851 they had moved to Brompton near Chatham in Kent, and Samuel was described as a corporal in the Royal Marines. Mary was working as a straw bonnet maker, and they lived at 16 Middle Street, in the part of Brompton which fell in the parish of Gillingham. They had three children at that time, who had been born alternating between Kent and Leighton Buzzard.

In 1861 Mary was still at Middle Street, Brompton, although in the part of Brompton which fell in Chatham parish. Samuel was away from home on census night, serving aboard HMS Trafalgar in the North Atlantic.

By 1871, Samuel had retired from the armed forces and the family moved about 300 miles north to Sunderland, where Samuel found work as a glassmaker. The 1871 census finds Mary and Samuel living at 14 St Cuthbert's Terrace in the town. Samuel died in 1879, aged 60. Mary survived him by nearly six years, and continued to live at 14 St Cuthbert's Terrace until her death. In the 1881 census she was working as a dress maker and had her daughter and two grandchildren living with her.

Mary died in 1885, aged 63. She was buried at Sunderland's Bishopwearmouth Cemetery on 25th February 1885.
