We find Samuel on the 1850 census next door to his father, Jacob, in Marion Twp., Hocking Co., Ohio. He is 26, a farmer, with wife Rosanna, age 17.[p 855 fam #214/220] Just when he went to Iowa is uncertain, but Samuel bought 93.5 acres from his father 3 Dec 1855 [Polk Co. Book of Deeds H, p. 404.] This deed corrected 31 Oct 1874 to show that land was actually in different part of the section than originally specified.[Abstract #62638, p 3] Rosanna died in Polk Co. , Ia., at age 22 yrs., 10 mo., 23 days.[Rittgers Cemetery Record] Samuel married (2) Christina EDGELL 28 Dec 1856 in Polk County, Ia. She was born about 1830 in Germany. By the 1860 census, he is listed next door to his father, Jacob (#1.2) in Jefferson Twp., Polk Co., Ia. With him is Christina and his children by Rosannah. Also in the home is one Mary E. Edzell, 6. [p 93, fam #747/682] Christina died 27 Sep 1875 in Mercer County, Mo. Samuel married (3) Marinda (Boston) HURST 5 Nov 1876. She was born about 1841 in Mo. The 1880 census shows Samuel, age 56, a farmer, in Washington Twp.("West half" stated on census record), Mercer Co., Mo. He has wife Merinda C., age 39 born in Missouri. She declares her father born in New York. Record too faint to read where mother born. [p 152A fam #1/1] In his father's estate, 1880, he is called "S.S.Rittgers a son of full age residing in Princeton, Mo." [Abstract #62638] Marinda died 6 Jan 1892 in Mercer Co., Mo. The 1900 Census gives Samuel, age 76, b. Sept. 1823 in Ohio. He is still farming. With him are his two youngest children, Sanford, age 18, b . June 1881 and Maggie, age 16, b. May 1884. They are in Harrison, Mercer Co., Mo.[ED 113 , p 6B, fam #117/119] Hartman's article tells us that Samuel moved to Mo. to "raise fruit trees . He was very self conscious of his heavy German accent - he had been raised with German as his first language - and never allowed his children to learn that language. He was united with the Methodist Evangelical Church."
