Mrs Nina Gowin Passes Away
Mrs. Nina Elma Gowin, widow of the late Frank Gowin, passed away late Saturday evening at her home at 712 East Main street, this city. The deceased had been in poor health for some time. She was 69 years of age.
Born in Richland county January 14, 1874, she spent her life as a music teacher of piano here and in Lawrence County. While serving as chairwoman of the Democrat women's organization of Richland county, she was appointed to a position at the Kankakee state institution at Kankakee, by the late Governor Henry Horner. She remained there until 1939 when her health bacame such as to necessitate her resignation. She was an ardent supporter of the principals of the Democrat party and as such made a name for herself in party circles in this part of the state.
Mrs. Gowin was interested in orchestral work and served as pianist for the following orders of which she was a member: Royal Neighbors, Rebeccas, Women's Relief Corp,
and Eastern Star of this city, and the White Shrine of Bridgeport.
She was a member of the Congregatioinal-Christian church, teaching in its Sunday school and taking an active part in the church's work in this community.
Surviving her are one brother, Amos Doan, of this city and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Congregational-Christian Church with Revs. Carey Christy and J.B. Bell, in charge. Internment was made in Haven Hill Cemetery.
