Overview

Often Confused With:

John Walker of Blount, Tennessee Unrelated John Walker, similar age in Cumberland, PA. Also had a spouse named Mary.

John Walker, son of Robert Walker is often confused with another John Walker who died in Blount County, Tennessee. However, this John is part of a genetically unrelated family. These two distinct men both served in the Revolutionary War under different commanders. Confusingly, both men also had a wife named Mary. Genetics and primary records indicate that John first settled in West Pennsboro, Cumberland, Pennnsylvania alongside with his father Robert. Around 1773 he moved with his family around Fort Loudon, Franklin, Pennsylvania where he worked as a blacksmith. John also served in the Revolutionary War with his brothers James and Samuel.[1]. He served under James Patton. The other John Walker who served under John Morrow was a distinct, unrelated man. He had another move in 1787 to Shirely Township, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Finally in the late 1790's he moved to the Chenoweth Creek Area of Louisville, Kentucky. While land transactions exist for the first three moves including the acquistion of land in Shirley Township[2], there is no record of his sold land in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. This suggests that an older child may have stayed back in Huntingdon when John moved to Louisville and kept the land. He moved between these regions with a group of neighbors that can be found both around his residences in Pennsylvania and Kentucky:

John died after 1820 with no existing probate record. He had at least two wives with one dying in 1778[9]. One of his wives' names was Mary according to land records. He had at least four recorded children in Pennsylvania:

Baptism 2 April 1775 Unnamed Child, father John Walker[10]
Baptism 2 Sep 1781 Samuel Walker, father John[11]
Baptism 20 May 1780 Jane Walker, father John[12]
Baptism 1783 Sarah Walker, father John[13]

Marriage records indicate additional children:

Margaret[14]
Nancy[15][16]
Mary[17][18]

He likely had additional children. This list is not completely verfied, but here are other probable children:

William Walker (found on Mary's marriage record)
James Walker (found on ? marriage record)
Adam Russell Walker (originated from Louisville, Kentucky. YDNA (Walker Group 33) matches this line of Walkers. His middle name Russell likely comes from Constantine Russell, a neighbor of John Walker in the 1820 census[19]
An additional child who had John M. Walker in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. This man also matches into YDNA Walker Group 33. It is likely an older child (probably named Robert or John) stayed back in Huntingdon, PA.
