McElhaney, John - Captain of Virginia troops; died 1/1/1806 leaving widow (died in 1832) & 7 children: Sophy (died before 1832), Betsy (dec'd before 1832), Strother L., Polly, Peggy, Jane (wife of David McCampbell), & Ann; this data given by affidavit in 1832 by John McCampbell age 62-63 in Rockbridge County, Virginia; affidavit made then there by Virginia Revolutionary War soldier John Wiley age 71; soldier's sufviving children then authorized William Willson, administrator's estate, to apply for Pension; Pension Application rejected, for evidence of places of residence of surviving children, & their assent to payment to soldier's estate administration, & for copy of soldier's last will & testament or proof that soldier died intestate; data furnished to Pension Office & children granted Pension due father; son Strother L. was living in 1843. 1. Maj. John1 McElhany was born December 16, 1751.
He married Mary Lewis April 21, 1783. Mary was born August 5, 1762. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Lewis and Jane Strother. Mary died 1829 at 66 years of age.
Maj. John McElhany and Mary Lewis had the following children:

- 6 v. McElhany.
- 7 vi. Jane Lewis McElhany. Jane died January 4, 1846. She married twice. She married David McCampbell December 11, 1817. David died November 6, 1841. (See David McCampbell for the continuation of this line.) She married Richard Morris December 1, 1845.

State of Virginia Rockbridge County viz. This day John McCampbell formerly a resident of Rockbridge County now a resident of the State of Ohio – appeared in open Court Being a Court of Record & made oath – That he was well acquainted with Major John McElhaney formerly of said County of Rockbridge & who served as a Captain in the Revolutionary Army – & that he the said McCampbell was at the Wake of said John McElhaney the night after his death – & that as well as (he) recollects he died on New Year's Day 1806 – & was buried the succeeding Day – This affiant was at that time a neighbor of said McElhaney & knows that it was considered a matter beyond all doubt be he had been a revolutionary soldier – & further that this deponent knew all his family and children – & that at the time of his death he had seven children – two of whom have since died without issue – viz. Sophy & Betsey – the other children now surviving are Strother L McElhaney – Polly McElhaney – Peggy McElhaney, Jane married to David McCampbell &Ann McElhaney – This affiant further states that he is now between sixty-two & three years of age. S/ John McCampbell This Day John Wiley a Citizen of Rockbridge County aged seventy-one years & a soldier of the Revolution appeared in open Court Being a Court of Record & made oath that he was well acquainted with John McElhaney both during the Revolutionary War & up to the time of his Death which occurred to the best of this affiant's memory on the first or 2nd day of January 1806. This affiant was with him after he had received and Injury which terminated in Death until he died & believes he is not mistaken as to the time. This affiant further states that he himself was a soldier of the Revolution & seen the said Captain John McElhaney in the service & in command in the character of a Captain belonging to the Virginia State line this affiant met with him in the lower part of Virginia on the South side of James River – the precise place this affiant does not recollect – This affiant lived within one mile of said McElhaney from the conclusion of the Revolutionary War – until the day of his death – their Plantations adjoining each other –& knows the notoriety as well as the fact that had been a Captain in the Virginia Line during [the] Revolutionary War – This affiant also was well acquainted with the said McElhaney's family his wife is now dead – he left seven children – two of whom have died since his death, without issue viz. Sophy & Betsey – his surviving children all of whom are still known to this affiant are Strother L McElhaney, Polly McElhaney, Peggy McElhaney, Jane married to David McCampbell &Ann McElhaney. This day William McKee a Citizen of Rockbridge aged seventy-three years – appeared in open Court Being a Court of record & made oath – That he knew John McElhaney now deceased formerly of Rockbridge County – during the revolutionary war & afterwards – That he seen him at the siege of York – & knows that he served as a Captain in the Virginia State line – having seen him acting in his official character. S/ Wm McKee State of Virginia Rockbridge County viz. This Day – Samuel Paxton2 aged eighty years appeared in open Court Being a Court of Record & made oath he the said Paxton served as a soldier during the Revolutionary War & was acquainted with John McElhaney who died in the said County of Rockbridge several years ago – that he seen the said McElhaney several times during the Revolutionary War & knows that he was a Captain in the Virginia State line & seen him occasionally after the war up to the time of his death. JOHN McELHANEY .
- was an officer in the 2nd Virginia State Regulars. He was 2nd Lieutenant 9 October 1777; 1st Lieutenant 9 August 1778; Captain 25 August 1779. Served to January 1780. Believe he then served as a Captain in the Virginia Militia until 1781. .
One source stated that he received 4,000 acres of land for his services during the Revolutionary War. The article said "Major John McElhaney did obtain a Military Land Warrant of 4,000 acres for his services in the late war between Great Britain and America in the Virginia State line which has been surveyed and located within Kentucky. 2,000 acres he had sold to William Walker and 2,000 acres to James McDowell. See Action Pickett vs. McDowell". .
He was referred to as a Major by an excomrad in 1832 and as a Colonel on a marker in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia: "In memory of Margaret J. Hamilton, Fourth daughter of Col.
