Will Abstract

Robert's will was written 10 June 1799. He left one half of his "plantation" to Mary, his wife, and the four single daughters, Mary, Elinor, Peggy and Isabella. The other half was left to his son, Robert, "provided he refrains from drinking strong liquor to excess." If he became a drunk, he only got one fifth of that half, sharing it equally with each of his single sisters. From the sale of lands at the mouth of Kerr's Creek his wife was to receive 30 pounds, son Robert 20, daughter Ann Moore 20, daughter Jenny Harrison 30 pounds and the balance to the single daughters. Eight Negro slaves were allocated, 3 to wife Mary (Dick Silvy, Joe and Rose), Suckky to daughter Mary, Hannah to Elinor, Lilla to Peggy, Sam to Isabella, and Andrew to son Robert. One third of his "movable estate:" went to wife Mary and two thirds to the single daughters. Two months later, August 9, he added that son John could have the land previously given, that John lived upon, and ten more pounds to Jenny Harrison. Jenny must have needed extra help as she was originally given 10 pounds more than the other married daughter, Ann Moore. Mary's will provided that Jenny should receive 10 pounds from "Elinor." Robert's will was probated 1 October 1799, leading us to believe he died in September.

Will of Wife Mary

MARY ELIZABETH ________ - was born about 1730 and lived until roughly February 1812, around 80 years of age, assuming she was born in 1730. She wrote her will 18 October 1811 and it was probated 2 March 1812. She left her negro girl Rose to Elinor, ten pounds to Jenny Harrison, and divided her remaining property between Elinor and Polly and her daughter believed to be Mary. Why Isabella, who died in 1841, received nothing is a mystery.
