1920 Newspaper unknown Obit contributed by Jerry Jackson "J. P. Jackson Dies at Age of 86 Years Aged Civil War Veteran and Farmer Succumbs to Senility John P. Jackson, one of the well known and highly respected citizens of this county, died at his home on North Main street Tuesday morning at 2:10 o'clock of senility. . .

"John P. Jackson was born in Knox county, O., Nov 5, 1833 to David and Prudence Hathaway Jackson and at his death was aged 86 years, 6 months and 13 days. He remained with his parents until eighteen years old when they moved to Allen county, Ind., where Mr. Jackson purchased a farm. The farm was later sold and the family moved to Thorncreek township, this county. The son remained with his parents during this time and assisted his father clear the land and harvest the crops until he entered the Union army as a volunteer. He enlisted at Kendallville, Oct 5, 1864, with Company B of 13th Indiana Volunteers, and was discharged at Goldsboro, N.C., Sept 5, 1865.

"After securing his discharge from the army Mr. Jackson returned to the home of his parents and was soon married to Miss Catherine Komp. To this union five (sic) children were born, all of who survive. They are Frederick Jackson of Fort Wayne; Mrs. A. J. Rouch, McCook, Neb., Daniel Jackson of Indianapolis; Chloe Jackson, Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. Holton Longnecker of Denver, Colo.

"During the month of August, 1881, Mr. Jackson lost his first wife by death and three years later he was united in marriage to Miss Martha J. Long who survives. The following children survive this union: Bertha Workman of this city; Clarence, Jesse, and Heber of Thorncreek township; Homer of Chicago, and Miss Edith of Washington, D.C.

Mr. Jackson was one of a family of fifteen children, all of whom preceded him in death, with the exception of one brother, Mahlon Jackson of Kansas, who is now in his 89th year.

"He was a member of the Sheckler Baptist church and a devoted Christian. Mr. Jackson remained on the farm in Thorncreek township which he acquired through hard work until a year ago in March when he purchased the Vern Kessler home on North Main street and moved to this city.

"He was one of the highly respected citizens of this county and had the confidence and friendship of all who knew him. He was a faithful husband and devoted father and did everthing within his power to get his children started out in life in the right direction.

"Mr. Jackson was a prominent member of the Geo. W. Stough post, G. A. R.

"The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church, Rev. G. H. O'Donnell officiating, with burial in the Stough cemetery."
