John Dugger is probably a son of Daniel Dugger and Mary Scarborough. There is no solid proof that he is their son, but they seem the only choice.

John Dugger was born ca 1721 or before, probably in Surry Co, VA (birth date based on his first public record in 1742 assuming he was at least 21 then). His first appearance was as a Witness to a deed in Brunswick Co, VA in 1742. He received a Patent for 337 acres in Brunswick Co, VA in 1748 on the north side of Great Creek up Gravelly Run. I believe this is in the vicinity of Lawrenceville, VA. John Dugger Sr received a 400 acre patent in 1749 on Rocky Run (same area as before). After that he was listed on some record (Court and Deeds mostly) nearly every year until his death in 1803.

John Dugger married Priscilla Bennett before ca 1740, she was a daughter of James Bennett. James named her in his Will dated 1752. John Dugger was a Witness.

On 3 Feb 1742 John Dugger witnessed a deed between Honeycutt and Cocker in Brunswick. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 2 page 223).

On 5 Apr 1748 John Dugger received a 337 acre land patent in Brunswick on the North side of Great Creek up Gravely Run, adjoining Captain John Brown and Abraham Brown. (Virginia Land Patents Book 26 page 329).

On 2 May 1748 John Dugger, John Embry and Lewis Lanier witnessed a deed between Thomas Parrot (of Henrico Co, VA) and John Merritt (of Prince George Co, VA) for land in Brunswick on south side of Waqua Creek. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 3 page 453).

On 25 Jul 1749 John Dugger received a 400 acre land patent in Brunswick on both sides of Rocky Run, adjoining Tatums Road. (Virginia Land Patents Book 27 page 232)

On 5 Sep 1749 John Dugger was mentioned as an adjoining land owner in a land patent to Edward Winfield on Avents Creek (it actually said adjoining John Brown, Cole and Dugger). (Virginia Land Patents 28 page 678)

On 15 Dec 1749 John Dugger was named again as an adjoining land owner in a land Patent, this one to James Bass for land on Avents Creek. Others adjoining were Winfield, Cole, Hix and Peterson. (Virginia Land Patents 27 page 506)

On 18 May 1751, John Dugger (and James Scott and Robert Campbell) witnessed a deed between John Rae and Jesse Tatum. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 5 page 124)

On 27 Sep 1751 John Dugger witnessed a deed between Liswell Sexton and his wife Millay to Anthony Metcalf. Other witnesses were Samuel Lucas and John Marshall. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 5 page 126)

On 4 Nov 1751 James Bennett of Brunswick Co, VA made his Will. Among others, he named his daughter "Priscilla Dugger". John Dugger was a witness to the Will. (Brunswick Co, VA Will Book 3 page 61)

On 21 Jan 1752 John Dugger (and James Stewart and The. Burk) witnessed a deed between Thomas Allstine (of Surry Co, VA) and Benjamin Harrison. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 5 page 216)

In January 1752, Brunswick Court, William Dugger (John's brother) and John Dugger sued John Overbie and John Roberts. I'm not sure for what reason. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 4 page 115)

In May 1753, Brunswick Court, The Constable entered a complaint against John Dugger. I don't know the details. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 4 page 498)

On 7 Feb 1755 John Dugger sold 100 acres to Benjamin Dugger (his brother) for 20 shillings (what a bargain!). The land was on Gravelly Run. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 5 page 715)

In March 1755, Brunswick Court, the deed between John Dugger and Benjamin Dugger was ordered to be recorded. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 5 page 380)

In July 1755, in Brunswick Court, Alexander Pool was made guardian of Isham House, an orphan, with James Clack and John Dugger as his securities. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 5 page 462)

In January 1756, in Brunswick Court, a Mortgage of John Dugger's was ordered recorded. Usually a mortgage would be recorded in the deed books, but I didn't see it there. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 5 page 520)

Also in January 1756 court, John Dugger obtained an attachment against the estate of Benjamin Dugger (his brother) who had absconded. Apparently Benjamin left the county owing money to John Dugger. It seems unlikely that it was the 20 shillings for the 100 acres sold to him in 1755, but it could have been. There was no record of Benjamin selling that land, so apparently when he absconded, it came into John's hands again per this attachment. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 5 page 524)

On 2 Jan 1760 John Dugger received a land patent in Brunswick Co, VA. I don't have the reference for this. In February 1760, in Brunswick Court, John Dugger was one of several appointed to appraise the estate of William Edwards, deceased. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 8 page 3).

On 21 Apr 1760 John Dugger purchased 307 acres from Joseph Proctor. Land on both sides of Gravely Run, adjoining Abraham Brown. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 30).

In June 1760 in Brunswick Court, the deed from Joseph Proctor to John Dugger was proven in court. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 87).

In February 1765, in Brunswick Court James Dugger and John Dugger Sr proved a deed from Proctor to Fort, in open court. I don't have the reference for that deed. Interestingly, this is the first record I've found referring to John Dugger as "Sr". This means that by this time, his son John Dugger had turned 21 and they now needed a way to distinguish themselves from one another in the public records. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 9 page 8).

In April 1765 in Brunswick Court, Charles --- (last name illegible) sued John Dugger. I have no details. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 9 page 38).

On 27 May 1765, John Dugger sold 104 acres of land to Francis Young, land on Fork of Line Branch, Rocky Run, granted to John Dugger in 1760 (This must be the 2 Jan 1760 Land Patent). (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 125).

On 26 Apr 1773 John Powell and John Dugger were bondsman for John Powell to be County Coroner. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 11 page 61).

On 24 May 1773 a list of Tithables for St Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co, VA was taken. Among those listed were the following Duggers: Alexander Dugger, James Dugger, John Dugger, and John Dugger Sr. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 11 page 138).

In February 1774, in Brunswick Court, Henry Rawlings was appointed guardian of Edith Tucker, an orphan of Blackman Tucker. John Dugger was security. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 12 page 531).

On 25 Apr 1774 John Dugger Sr purchased 100 acres from Peter Freeman and wife Faithey and Phebe Smith. The land was on Gravelly Run. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 11 page 301).

On 26 Jan 1777 John Dugger sold 300 acres on Gravely Run to William Rainey. Witnesses were three of his sons: John Dugger Jr, James Dugger and Howell Dugger. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 141).

On 14 Feb 1778 John Dugger (Jr?) purchased 233 acres on both sides of Sandy Creek from Flood Mitchell of Granville Co, NC. Witnesses were John Dugger (Sr?), Howell Dugger, Alexander Dugger, and Daniel Dugger (all sons of John Sr, except Alexander, who was probably a nephew). The fact that neither John, the grantee, nor John the witness, were designated "Jr" or "Sr" makes it hard to determine who was who. This deed may be for John Jr, with John Sr as a witness. The associated court record seems to show John Sr as one of the witnesses (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 13 page 189).

In May 1778, in Brunswick Court, John Dugger and John Dugger Jr (his son) were securities for someone (name not listed, or illegible). (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 13 page 206).

On 12 Sep 1778 John Dugger Sr was paid by the Parish for maintaining Henry King, son of Amy King. (Bath Parish Register of Dinwiddie and St Andrew's Parish Vestry Book of Brunswick" by William Lindsay Hopkins, 1989)

In October 1778, in Brunswick Court, the deed from Flood Mitchell to John Dugger (Jr) was proven in court by John Dugger Sr, Howell Dugger and Daniel Dugger. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 12 page 227).

On 8 Feb 1779 Henry Dugger (brother of John) sold John Dugger 200 acres. Witnesses were: David Moss, Edward Marks, Thomas Firth, Howell Dugger and James Dugger. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 13 page 301).

Beginning in 1782, Brunswick Co, VA tax lists are extant for several years. They consist of a separate list for real property and for personal property. John Dugger Sr was listed on all (or most) of these until his death. These gave some interesting information, ripe for analysis.

Beginning in 1786 John Dugger Sr was listed under his son Howell Dugger for the tax records, meaning that Howell was responsible for his father's taxes. John was about 65 or older by then.

Howell Dugger was listed on the 1786 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list with 8 persons, and 4 tithes, including John Dugger Sr (his father) and slaves Dick, Jenny and 4 more under 16 years of age.

In May 1787, in Brunswick Court, "John Dugger" and John Dugger, Surry were called for jury duty. I'm not sure if John was Sr or Jr, as it wasn't listed. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 14 page 513).

In September 1787, in Brunswick Co, VA, John Dugger made a petition to have his several adjoining land tracts resurveyed in one inclusive survey (in other words, make it all one piece of land, legally). This record doesn't say "Sr" or "Jr", but I believe this is for Sr. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 17 page 391).

Howell Dugger was listed on the 1788 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list with no white males age 16-21, 2 blacks over 16, 1 blacks under 16, and two white males over 16: Howell (himself) and John Dugger (his father).

John Dugger was probably listed on the 1790 census in Brunswick Co, VA, but unfortunately, the entire 1790 census for Virginia was lost.

John Dugger Sr was listed on the 1790 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list with 2 white tithables, 2 blacks age 16 and up, and 2 blacks between 12 and 16. The 2 white tithes were himself, and the other was probably his son Howell, who wasn't listed elsewhere on this tax list.

On 19 Oct 1793 John Dugger Sr sold Daniel Dugger (his son) 400 acres on a branch of Rocky Run, head of a branch of Gravelly Run, bordering line of James Dugger, deceased (his son). Witnesses were John Dugger Jr, (his son), John Ferguson and Jerman Dugger (his grandson). (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 15 page 484)

On 12 Nov 1793 John Dugger Sr sold 75 acres to William Brown of Surry Co, VA. Land was on the south side of Rose Creek. Witnesses were Thomas Gholson, John Dugger Jr (his son), Jarman Dugger (his grandson) and Benjamin Lane. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 15 page 462).

John Dugger Sr was listed on the 1794 Real Property Tax list in Saint Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co, VA. He was listed with 325 acres of land, showing an alteration of 75 acres sold to William Brown. (deed dated 12 Nov 1793 above). He also sold 400 acres in 1793, but that doesn't show up here, and didn't seem to show up on the tax entries before either.

On 29 Jun 1794 John Dugger Sr sold 179 acres to Sampson Dugger, (whom I believe was a grandson). The land was on a line between said Sampson Dugger and Sterling Dugger, deceased (a nephew) and John Dugger Jr (his son). Witnesses were John Dugger Jr, Edwin Fort and James Dugger (his grandson). (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 17 page 448).

John Dugger and Howell Dugger were listed together again on the 1795 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list with 2 white tithables, 4 blacks age 16 and up, and 0 blacks between 12 and 16.

John Dugger Sr was listed on the 1795 Real Property Tax list in Saint Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co, VA. He was listed with 125 acres of land, showing an alteration of 200 acres to James and Samson Dugger. A deed dated 29 Jun 1794 shows John selling 179 acres to Sampson Dugger, but that leaves 21 acres, presumably sold to James Dugger, but I found no deed for that.

On 30 May 1795 John Dugger Sr sold 50 acres to Sampson Dugger "of Northampton Co, NC", land on Gravelly Run, Spring Branch. Witnesses were John Rawlings, Daniel Dugger (his son) and Edwin Fort. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 16 page 113)

John Dugger Sr was listed on the 1796 Real Property Tax list in Saint Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co, VA. He was listed with 75 acres of land, showing an alteration of 50 acres to Samson Dugger. A deed dated 30 May 1795 shows John selling 50 acres to Sampson Dugger (his grandson).

Beginning in 1797 John Dugger Sr was on his own again for the personal property tax lists, and not listed with his son Howell Dugger.

John Dugger Sr was listed on the 1797 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list with 1 white tithable, 3 blacks age 16 and up, and 0 blacks between 12 and 16.

John Dugger Sr was listed on the 1797 Real Property Tax list in Saint Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co, VA. He was shown with 75 acres (same as in 1796) but with 200 acres added, being from James Dugger, deceased (his son), and another 125 acres that was formerly omitted. There was no deed showing the land going from James to his father John, so I suspect that John only had this land as administrator of James' estate, so he didn't actually own it, but was responsible for it. The additional 125 acres came from somewhere, but I don't know where yet. A careful analysis of all of John Sr's deeds should be able to account for all of his land purchases and sales.

On 11 Feb 1797 John Dugger Sr sold 150 acres to Wright Griffin of Southampton Co, VA. The land was on both sides of Gravelly Run, adjoining Sampson Dugger. On 11 Feb 1799 John Dugger Sr sold 100 acres to Henry Dugger Jr (his nephew). Land was on north side of Gravelly Run. Witnesses were James Stainback (John's grand nephew), Jordon Richardson (John's grandson-in-law) and William Firth. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 17 page 391).

In June 1799, in Brunswick Court, the deed from John Dugger to Henry Dugger was proven in court by James Stainback, Jordan Richardson and William Firth. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 15 page 179)

John Dugger Sr was probably listed on the 1800 census in Brunswick Co, VA, but unfortunately, the 1800 census for the State of Virginia was lost (except for one county).

In October 1800 in Brunswick Court, Robert Harrison, assignee of John Dugger, executor for John Bennett, sued Daniel Dugger and Richmond Dugger for debt on a bond. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 18 page 417)

On 6 Apr 1802 John Dugger Sr made his Will in Brunswick County, VA. It was recorded on 27 Dec 1803 in Will Book 6 page 467. It was a large will and named quite a few people. Several were named without a relationship being stated.

"IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN: I, JOHN DUGGER of the county of Brunswick and the state of Virginia, being weak in body but thanks be to Almighty God, of sound mind and perfect memory, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following. IMPREMIS, I lend unto my Grandson, Richmond Dugger, during the life of my Daughter, Charlotte, all my land lying on the west side of Gravelly Run, after the death of my said daughter, I give the said lands to my Grandson, Lovewell Dugger, to him and his heirs forever, provided he has an heir or heirs lawfully begotten of his own body, otherwise I only lend it to the said Lovewell Dugger during his natural life and after his death I give the said lands to my grandson Richmond Dugger to him and his heirs forever. 2nd, I give to My Son Daniel Dugger, all my lands lying on the east side of Gravelly Run to him and heirs forever. 3rd, I lend to My Daughter Charlotte during her natural life, four Negroes, Viz: Jack, Bob, Vicey, and Frankey, with their increase and after death of my said daughter, I give the said Negroes with their said increases to my Son Daniel Dugger to him and his heirs forever. 4th, I give to my Daughter Urana Price, two Negro girls named, Polly and Dinah with their increase and one feather bed and furniture, to her and her heirs forever. 5th, I give unto My Daughter Louisa Stainback, a negro boy named Michael to her and her heirs forever. 6th; I lend unto my daughter in law Fanny Dugger during her natural life a negro woman named Hannah with her increase and after the death of my said daughter in law I give the said negro woman named Hannah with her increase to my son Daniel Dugger and my grandsons James & Thomas Dugger to be equally divided among them to them and their heirs forever. 7th, I leave the rest of my estate to be sold and after paying my just debts, I give out of the proceeds thereof to my Daughter Mary Duke, ten pounds, to Urana Price, twenty pounds, to my Son, Howell Dugger, six shillings, to the heirs of Lucretia Andrews, six shillings, to the heirs of James Dugger, six shillings, to the heirs of Sally Duke, six shillings, to the heirs of Francis Dugger, six shillings, and to Martha Whitaker, six shillings, the balance to be devided between my Son Daniel, the heirs of my Son John, to them their heirs forever. This last will and testament of John Dugger, deceased, was proven by the oath of Joseph Percivall, William Dugger and James Dugger the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Daniel Dugger, one of the executors therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with Richmond Dugger, William Rainey, Jessee Rainey, Wright Griffin and Randolph Rawlings, his securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of four thousand dollars. Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form, liberty being reserved the other executors therein named to join in the said probate when he sees best. Teste Herbert Hill C.B.C"

The above Will proves that John Dugger Sr died sometime around December 1803 in Brunswick Co, VA. Since his wife Priscilla was not named in the Will, we can assume she had died prior to then.

John did not appear on the 1803 (or 1804, etc) Personal Property tax lists. However, he was listed on several Real Property Tax lists well after his death. This was due to his Real Property (land) being still in his name until final division of his estate.

In February 1804, in Brunswick Court, an Inventory and Appraisal of the estate of John Dugger, deceased, was presented in court by Daniel Dugger. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 20 page 233)

In May 1810, in Brunswick Court, Philip Pryor, administrator of Henry Dugger, deceased (John's brother) sued Daniel Dugger, executor of John Dugger Sr, deceased. However, since Daniel was also dead by then, the case fell to James Dugger, "administrator de bonis non" for John Dugger Sr. This suggests that the estate was still being settled nearly 10 years after John's death. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 23 page 404).

John Dugger Sr was listed on the 1811 Real Property Tax list in Saint Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co, VA. He was listed with 75 acres (as before), and 100 acres (as before) and with 31 acres (as before).

The 1811 tax record was the last one found for John Dugger Sr, so presumably his real property was distributed to his heirs about that time.
