Howell Dugger was born ca 1756 or earlier, assuming he was at least 21 when his first public record was made in 1777. However his father was named in Howell’s 1778 marriage suggesting he was still under 21 at that point, so perhaps born ca 1758-1759 instead. His first record in his own right was dated Oct 1783, so certainly 21 by then (born ca 1762 or earlier). On 26 Jan 1777 John Dugger Jr, James Dugger and Howell Dugger witnessed a deed from John Dugger to William Rainey. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 12 page 141). On 14 Feb 1778 John Dugger, Howell Dugger, Alexander Dugger and Daniel Dugger witnessed a deed from Flood Mitchell to John Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 13 page 189). On 24 Aug 1778 Howell Dugger of Brunswick Co., VA married Sarah Vick of St. Luke’s Parish in neighboring Southampton Co., VA. John Dugger father of Howell Dugger gave his consent. Thomas Vick, Sam Kello, James Dugger and Daniel Dugger were bondsmen. In Oct 1778 court, John Dugger Sr, Howel Dugger, and Daniel Dugger proved the deed from Flood Mitchell to John Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 12 page 227). On 8 Feb 1779 David Moss, Edward Marks, Thomas Firth, Howell Dugger and James Dugger witnessed a deed from Henry Dugger to John Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 13 page 301). On 17 Oct 1780 Howell Dugger witnessed a deed from Pilkington to Pilkington. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 14 page 22). Howell Dugger was included in his father John Dugger Sr.’s 1783 Personal Property Tax List entry. In Oct 1783 court Howell Dugger sued William Chapman and Charles Williamson for debt. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 8 page 279). Howell Dugger was included in his father John Dugger Sr.’s 1784 Personal Property Tax List entry. In Mar 1784 court, Meade and Withers, Executors of George Walker sued Howell Dugger and John Dugger Jr for debt. They didn’t show up, so ordered to appear next court. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 8 page 348). Howell Dugger was included in his father John Dugger Sr.’s 1785 Personal Property Tax List entry. In Mar 1785 court, Meade and Withers, Executors of George Walker, deceased, sued Howell Dugger and John Dugger Jr. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 14 page 94). In Jun 1785 court, Howell Dugger, John Dugger and Sarah Dugger were named as Administrators of James Dugger, deceased. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 14 page 134). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1786 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list and taxed for 8 persons, and 4 tithes, including John Dugger Sr (his father), and slaves: Dick, Jenny and 4 Negroes under 16 (not named). In Jul 1786 court, Meade and Withers, Executors of George Walker, deceased sued Howell Dugger, John Dugger and John Dugger Jr for debt. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 14 page 324). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1787 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with no whites between 16 and 21, two over 21 (himself and John Dugger (father)); 3 blacks over 16; 4 blacks under 16. In May 1787 court, Howell Dugger was a juror. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 14 page 514). In Nov 1787 court, Sadler and Company sued Joseph Price and Howell Dugger for debt. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 14 page 596). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1788 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with no whites between 16 and 21, two over 21 (himself and John Dugger (father)); 2 blacks over 16; 1 black under 16. In 1788 court, Hicks sued Edward and John Parish, Daniel Dugger and Howell Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 15 page 28). In May 1788 court, Hicks and Harrison, Executors of E. Scarborough, deceased, sued Edward Parish, John Parish, Daniel Dugger and Howell Dugger for debt. Jesse Edwards and John Dugger Jr were their securities. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 15 page 88). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1789 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 2 white tithables, 1 black over 16, 1 black 12 to 16. In Nov 1789 court, Howell Dugger and John Dugger sued Robert Hicks, Executor of Edward Scarborough for an injunction. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 15 page 245). Howell Dugger wasn’t listed on the 1790 tax list, but his father John Dugger Sr was, and he had two white tithables, one of whom was certainly Howell Dugger. Howell Dugger and John Dugger were listed together on the 1791 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 2 white tithables, 3 blacks over 16, and 1 black 12 to 16. Howell Dugger and John Dugger were listed together on the 1792 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 2 white tithables, 4 blacks over 16, and 1 black 12 to 16. On 27 Feb 1792 Richardson Brown, Joseph Price and Howel Dugger were bondsmen for the Brunswick Co., VA marriage bond of Henry Duggar and Armon Duggar, daughter of Lurany Price. (Lurany was Howell’s sister). Howell Dugger and John Dugger were listed together on the 1793 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 2 white tithables, 3 blacks over 16, and 1 black 12 to 16. Howell Dugger and John Dugger were listed together on the 1794 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 2 white tithables, 4 blacks over 16, and 1 black 12 to 16. Howell Dugger and John Dugger were listed together on the 1795 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 2 white tithables, 4 blacks over 16, and no blacks 12 to 16. Sarah Vick Dugger died sometime prior to Dec 1795, presumably in Brunswick Co., VA. On 21 Dec 1795 Howell Dugger obtained a marriage bond in Brunswick Co., VA to marry Polly B. Firth, age 21. William Firth and John Dugger Jr were bondsmen. Aaron Brown, Methodist Minister married them on 24 Dec 1795. Howell Dugger and John Dugger were listed together on the 1796 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 2 white tithables, 4 blacks over 16, and no blacks 12 to 16. In Feb 1796 court, William Smith sued Howell Dugger and Daniel Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 17 page 29). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1797 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 1 white tithables, no blacks over 16, and no blacks 12 to 16. On 11 Feb 1797 Thomas Drake, John Dugger Jr and Howell Dugger witnessed a deed from John Dugger Sr to Wright Griffin. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 17 page 164). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1798 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 1 white tithables, no blacks over 16, and no blacks 12 to 16. In Nov 1798 court, Martha Simmons and Sterling Edwards, administrators of Benjamin Simmons, deceased, sued John Dugger and Howell Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 18 page 29). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1799 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 1 white tithables, no blacks over 16, and no blacks 12 to 16. Howell Dugger was listed on the 1800 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 1 white tithables, no blacks over 16, and 1 black 12 to 16. In Aug 1800 court, Benjamin Parker sued William Fortiscue, John Dugger Jr and Howell Dugger for debt. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 18 page 371). In 1801 (no full date, recorded 27 Dec 1802), Thomas Firth and wife Nancy; Randolph Rawlings and wife Elizabeth B.; Howell Dugger and wife Mary; John Rainey and wife Sally; Henry Abernathy and wife Rebeckay deeded 125 acres to William Firth for L90. This was land formerly belonging to Thomas Firth, deceased. (Though it doesn’t say so here, Thomas Firth was their father.) Witnessed by Hubbard Saunders, William Fortiscue, Richmond Dugger, Henry Harwell and Elizabeth Dugger. (Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 18 page 334). Howell Dugger was listed on the 1801 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list with 1 white tithables, no blacks over 16, and 1 black 12 to 16. Howell Dugger was not listed on the 1802 Brunswick Co., VA Personal Property tax list showing he was no longer a resident of the county. In Apr 1802 court, David Meredith, administrator of William Pilkington, deceased, sued for an attachment against the estate of Howell Dugger “who hath removed from the county.” This shows that Howell had left Brunswick County by this time. (Brunswick Co., VA Order Book 19 page 245). I wasn’t able to find Howell Dugger listed on the 1810 or 1820 census. |
