Henry Dugger is a proven son of Daniel Dugger and Mary Scarborough. He has the distinction of being the only child of Daniel and Mary who is actually proven by a primary source.

Henry was born ca 1733 or before, based on his first public record in 1754 assuming he was at least 21 then.

Henry Dugger married Ann Bailey prior to ca 1756 in Surry Co, VA. She was a daughter of Edward Bailey who died in 1756.

On 12 Aug 1754 Henry Dugger witnessed the Surry Co, VA Will of John Collier (of Southwark Parish). (Surry Co, VA Deeds and Wills page 16)

On 17 Aug 1756 Daniel Dugger gave 125 acres to his son Henry Dugger "for love and affection", this being the land where Daniel lived at the time, on both sides of Buck Horn Branch bordering Stephen Collier and Marmaduke Cheatham in Surry Co, VA. (Surry Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 273)

On 26 Nov 1756 Henry Dugger witnessed the Will of his father-in-law Edward Bailey in Surry Co, VA, who lived on north side of Cypress Swamp (per the Will). (Surry Co, VA Deeds and Wills page 290)

In Surry County, VA Court, August 1761, Henry Dugger was appointed surveyor of the road taking the place of Henry Barnes. (Surry Co, VA Court Minutes 1757-1763 page 297)

In Surry County Court, June 1768, Henry Dugger and Ann his wife, were named as heirs of Edward Bailey, deceased, in a settlement of his estate. The case was Thomas King and wife Mary; Benjamin Putney and wife Sarah, Henry Dugger and wife Ann, William Bailey, Edward Marks and wife Lucy, John Bailey and Henry Bailey (these last two infants, by their brother Edward Bailey, versus Thomas Bailey, executor of Edward Bailey, deceased. Each heir received L33.6.8 from the estate. This document is the proof that Henry Dugger's wife Ann was a daughter of Edward Bailey. (Surry Co, VA Court Minutes 1764-1774 page 154)

On 17 Sep 1771 Henry Dugger and wife Ann sold land to Stephen Sorbsy. This land was left by Joseph Jordan, (Will 1770) deceased to be sold by Joseph Cheatham, his executor, and he (Cheatham) sold the land to the Duggers. (Surry Co, VA Deed Book 10 page 145).

On 22 Aug 1772, Henry Dugger was chosen as one of 12 menu to settle a land dispute between Thomas Washington and Nathaniel Sebrell in Surry Co, VA. (Surry Co, VA Deed Book 10 page 220).

In Surry Court, April 1773, Henry Dugger was paid 215 pounds of Tobacco by James Dewell for 11 days attendance at court (as a witness) (Surry Co, VA Court Minutes 1764-1774 page 367)

In Surry Court, June 1773, James Dewell and Henry Dugger were being sued by Christopher McRae and were charged for failing to appear in court. (Surry Co, VA Court Minutes 1764-1774 page 381)

On 26 May 1777 John Price (or Prince) sold 200 acres in Brunswick Co, VA to Henry Dugger. This probably indicates the timeframe that Henry and his family (including his parents) moved from Surry to Brunswick. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 2 page 219)

In Brunswick Co, VA Court, November 1777, Henry Dugger and James Dugger (his nephew) acted as Securities for Alexander Dugger (also his nephew) who was appointed guardian of Mary and Charles Edwards, orphans of Charles Edwards, deceased. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 13 page 175)

On 20 Apr 1778 Henry Dugger, of Brunswick, planter, sold 125 acres in Surry Co, VA to Joseph Cheatham of Surry. Land on both sides of Buck Horn Branch. This seems to be the same land Daniel Dugger deeded to his son Henry in 1756. Witnesses to the deed were James Cheatham Jr, John Simmons and John Venable. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 11 page 7)

On 8 Dec 1779 Henry Dugger sold 200 acres to his brother John Dugger. Witnesses were David Moss, Edward Marks, Thomas Firth and John's sons Howell Dugger and James Dugger. This appears to be the same land that John Price (or Prince) sold Henry in 1777. Selling this land seems to have left Henry without any land. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 13 page 301)

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1782 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, and charged for 1 white tithe (himself).

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1783 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, and charged for 2 tithes, including his son James Dugger (so named on the record) who was under 21 (but over 16 or else he wouldn't be tithable).

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1784 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, and charged for 2 tithes, including his son James Dugger (so named on the record).

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1785 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, and charged for 1 tithe (himself). His son James Dugger was not listed with him this time, but with Edward Marks instead (probably working for Marks as a laborer).

For one reason or another, Henry Dugger was not listed on the 1786 nor 1787 tax list. This may indicate that he temporarily left the county, or was just not listed for some reason.

A Henry Dugger was listed in Brunswick Co, VA for the 1788 personal property tax list. He was charged for 1 white male age 16-21 only, and no others. This is probably Henry Dugger (Jr) son of this Henry. That means Henry Sr still wasn't around in 1788, unless this record is actually for Sr instead..

In Brunswick County Court, May 1788, Daniel Harrison sued Daniel Dugger and Henry Dugger for debt. I'm fairly sure that this is Henry Sr and his nephew Daniel Dugger. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 15 page 12)

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1789 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, He was charged for 2 whites, and one black over age 16 (I didn't find a deed record showing him obtaining a slave). In 1790 and later, Henry Sr had no black tithables. The 2nd white was probably Henry Dugger Jr

On 1 Apr 1790, Henry Dugger and others, including Sterling Dugger (his son), William Goodrum, Daniel Dugger (his nephew) witnessed a deed between John Dugger, Surry and wife Frances (John is Henry's nephew) to Jerman Dugger (his nephew). (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 630).

Henry Dugger was listed as Henry Dugger "Sr" for the first time on the 1790 tax list. He was charged with only 1 white this time (his son Henry Jr was listed on his own in 1790). Since Henry's son Henry had come of age ca 1790, now they began using "Sr" and "Jr" to distinguish themselves.

Henry Dugger Sr was probably listed on the 1790 census, but unfortunately, this entire census was lost for Virginia.

On 17 June 1798, Henry Dugger and John Dugger Jr witnessed the Will of John Bennett in Brunswick Co, VA. (Brunswick Co, VA Will Book 6 page 199)

In October 1798 court, John Dugger (Jr) and Henry Dugger proved the Will of John Bennett in court. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 18 page 13).

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1799 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, He was charged for 1 white. He wasn't listed as "Sr" this time, but his son Henry Dugger was listed also, but as "Jr".

Henry Dugger Sr was probably listed on the 1800 census, but unfortunately, this census was lost for the state of Virginia (all but one county, I believe).

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1801 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, He was charged for 1 white. He wasn't listed as "Sr" this time, but his son Henry Dugger was listed also, but as "Jr".

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1802 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, He was charged for 1 white. He wasn't listed as "Sr" this time, but his son Henry Dugger was listed also, but as "Jr".

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1803 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, He was charged for 1 white.

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1804 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, He was charged for 1 white.

Henry Dugger was listed on the 1805 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list, He was charged for 1 white.

Apparently Ann Bailey Dugger died prior to 1805, as she wasn't named in Henry's Will.

Henry Dugger made his Will on 9 Jul 1805 in Brunswick Co, VA. The Will was proven in Court 24 Feb 1806, so he died sometime circa February 1806. His Will was recorded in Brunswick Co, VA Will Book 7 page 160.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Henry Dugger, of Brunswick County & State of Virginia being infirm in body but of perfect mind and memory do ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say I give to my beloved son James Dugger one dollar. Item: I give to my beloved daughter Sally Shell one dollar. Item: I give to my beloved son Henry Dugger one half of my hogs. Item: I give to my beloved daughter Rebecca Dugger all the remainder of my estate. I also appoint my son James Dugger to by my Executor of this my last will and testament. In witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of July Eighteen hundred and five. S: Henry Dugger. Witnesses: Richardson Brown, Edward M. Brown. Brunswick County Court February 24th , 1806. This last will and testament of Henry Dugger, Dec’d is proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of James Dugger the Executor therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with Lester Morriss his security entered.
