There are fewer than 20 public family trees for this couple on Ancestry, though there may be additional trees listed under variant spellings of given names and surnames. The trees examined show considerable inconsistency in terms of child lists, wives, and vita. Some of the variants indicate the fathers name as "John William Patterson", though this is much too early for trinomial's to be in use. No original source documentation was noticed to justify using one set of children over another.

This probably indicates a confusion, where data for two different persons (a John Patterson and a William Patterson) have been merged. The differences in child lists may result from this, with both John and William having a son James---and each James would have a separate and different child list. At this time a reliable child list for James can not be given.
